Today, the Wildcats came out of their offensive slump and handled the Tar Heels in Lexington.

It’s hard to be anything other than happy when the Kentucky Wildcats beat the North Carolina Tar Heels in men’s basketball, no matter if it’s a 1-point margin courtesy of an Anthony Davis block a la 2011, or by a strong 14-point margin courtesy of an offensive explosion as happened today. Any victory over fellow bluebloods like the Tar Heels is a cause for celebration in the Big Blue Nation.

I think North Carolina deserves a lot of credit for the way they played today. The score may look lopsided, but they Tar Heels made it very interesting in the second half and seemingly never went away. Marcus Paige almost single-handedly turned the contest back into a ball game, but there isn’t any real question about who the better team was today. Still, thanks to the Tar Heels for the fine effort. We’ll be seeing you guys again soon enough.

For Kentucky, a bunch of cold shooting went by the boards today, as the Wildcats exploded for 7 made threes on 15 attempts, by far their best performance of the season from the outside. Not only that, but the Wildcats performed well from the line and shot well from inside the arc. Only in the areas of turnovers and rebounding did Kentucky fall short of expectations.

Team observations

Kentucky’s offense was really much better today from front to back. It was smoother, it was efficient, it was exactly what we want from this team.

Kentucky took the negative of Alex Poythress’ loss to injury and turned it into a motivator.

You may be tempted to complain about the defense, but remember — North Carolina is very talented, and the loss of Alex was always going to hit the defense hardest.

The defensive intensity could’ve been better, but with the rotations a bit of a mess the last few games, I think we can make allowances.

Turnovers, AARGHH! Also offensive rebounding needs to be better, but this UNC team is a very good offensive rebounding team.

Marcus Paige’s explosion in the second half is the only reason UK did not hold UNC to under 1 point/possession.

Transition defense is still a problem, and UNC exploited it well today.

Notice that UNC shot 12 more shots than Kentucky. I scratched my head about that for a second, but the reason is because they put us on the line so much, and those don’t count as shot attempts. It’s pretty rare to see the losing team get that many more shots than the winners.

Individual observations

Once again, Willie Cauley-Stein was dominant, and gets the game ball. He had 15 points on 6-9 shooting, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 2 blocks and 4 steals. He also had zero personal fouls. That’s a stat sheet stuffed like a Christmas turkey. He was unbelievably disruptive on defense.

Aaron Harrison had a particularly great game, making 3-7 from the arc and scoring 14 pionts. It was great to see Aaron break out from deep.

Andrew Harrison gets an honorable mention for the game ball. He had 5 assists and 3 turnovers, not that great, but he should’ve had about 11 assists if you count all the great passes that led to fouls. He also made 9-10 from the line, and that is about as efficient as you can get.

Tyler Ulis had a particularly noteworthy game as well with 8 assists and 3 turnovers. He’s still having trouble with traps, and they’re going to have to work on that the next two weeks. Louisville will not fail to notice.

Devin Booker may have the sweetest stroke since Kyle Wiltjer, and today, they went in so clean I’m not sure he touched the rim. He made all three of his 3-point shots. Booker had some bad turnovers and questionable decisions befitting his tender years.

Trey Lyles was great. He did his damage from midrange, missed only 2 shots, and played well in excess of his years.

Karl-Anthony Towns was about the only guy who was not himself today. He had only 2 points on a pair of made free throws and attempted no shots. He got only 2 rebounds, but did have a block.

Marcus Lee was totally excellent today. He made all of his shots, intimidated several on defense, was very active, did not turn the ball over at all and had 2 assists.

Dakari Johnson was good again today. He had five rebounds, made 5-6 from the line and had 2 blocks and 3 steals.

Tying it all up

This was just a terrific performance from Kentucky. If the Wildcats can generate offense in the 1.2 points/possession range all season against teams like Kansas and North Carolina, nobody is going to come remotely close to actually beating them. I still don’t think that’s going to happen, and I still think the Wildcats will suffer a loss or two. But it’s hard to see where they are going to come from after this game.

Once Kentucky is able to integrate the change of an absent Poythress, I think they can get their defense back on track. It really wasn’t bad today, although UNC had more success both inside and out than most teams have this year. A lot of that is about the skill that North Carolina brings to the table — defense can only do so much against a team that’s nearly as big and skilled as you are, and we saw a little of that against Texas.

But overall, I’m thrilled with this victory. UK does have some things that need work, like getting the ball up and scoring against the trap — that really gave us problems when UNC went to it, probably a little too late for it to affect the game. Still, Louisville will trap like crazy, and Kentucky has to be well prepared for that.

I also love the way we attacked the rim today, particularly the Harrisons. They are the reason that so many possessions ended in fouls and free throws, and that is something that doesn’t really show up in the stats. It’s easy to sing Ulis’ praises, and we should, but Andrew particularly had a major negative effect on the Tar Heels with his penetration and passing.

Next up — the UCLA Bruins next Saturday.

Kentucky avenges last season's loss at the Dean Dome by defeating the Tar Heels in Rupp Arena.

The Kentucky Wildcats defeats the North Carolina Tar Heels today 84-70, a convincing win that could have been a lot better. Having said that, there is a bunch of good stuff and a few bad things to talk about today’s game, but the main point here is that Kentucky won this game and goes to 11-0.

North Carolina played pretty well. They were up against an unusually big team in a legendary home arena, and that really made it a tough proposition for the Tar Heels. They did a lot of good things, like beat Kentucky in transition a lot, and that trap they put on really hurt UK late, even though the issue was likely no longer in doubt. Marcus Paige found his rhythm from three, which I’m sure will be good news to UNC fans. We wish our foes from Chapel Hill well for the rest of the season, I expect them to be a factor in the NCAA Tournament and the ACC regular season.

Kentucky shot the ball well today from everywhere. That’s different. I can’t wait to see the efficiency numbers for Kentucky, they are going to be splendid.

Kentucky’s legendary defense took a hit today.

Turnovers were a problem for Kentucky today. They forced more than they gave up, but that’s not the goal — the goal is to never give it up and take it away a lot.

33 points off the bench is notable.

I think Alex Poythress’ absence will mostly be reflected in the defensive numbers. Trey Lyles, his replacement, had an impressive game.

I’m worried about Roy Williams’ health. He’s had several episodes lately. I really hope he’s okay.

North Carolina played pretty well, but turnovers and offensive rebounds killed them.

I’ll have the full postmortem a bit later today. In the meantime, talk about the big win, these moments come far to infrequently not to enjoy.

Kentucky got hot from three, and the result is predictable - a big lead.

That was an impressive half of basketball from both teams, but especially from the Kentucky Wildcats as they lead the North Carolina Tar Heels 49-34 at halftime. This first half was a tale of Kentucky’s defensive pressure having a very strong effect on North Carolina’s ballhandling, as well as the ability of North Carolina to score in the paint and in transition.

What we see here is a couple of things; first, it is Kentucky’s 3-point and free throw shooting making the Wildcats unstoppably efficient on offense. If Kentucky continues to do these three things, and take care of the ball (6 turnovers is a little high, but not absurd in a game with this many possessions) they will be impossible to beat. To big, too good.

However, the Tar Heels have been able to exploit Kentucky in transition, and have been very efficient in the paint. They are also shooting an acceptable percentage from three for them.

Observations

Kentucky is getting to the line like nobody’s business. No less than four Tar Heels have 2 fouls already, and their depth is nowhere near Kentucky’s.

Devin Booker and Andrew Harrison are responsible for the margin.

UNC has more second chance points than UK.

Six steals for Kentucky — that will add years to Ol’ Roy.

Tyler Ulis with four dimes.

Let’s get this W for Alex. If UK can continue to shoot the ball like this, there is no way to stop them from running over any team in college basketball. I had a feeling this shooting slump couldn’t last, and it hasn’t.

Saturday at high noon, two bluebloods clash in Rupp Arena.

Tomorrow, the Kentucky Wildcats welcome the North Carolina Tar Heels to Rupp Arena for the renewal of one of the great inter-conference rivalries in college basketball. Yes, it is inferior to Kentucky’s rivalry with the Louisville Cardinals, and perhaps it isn’t as downright nasty as the rivalry between UK and the Indiana Hoosiers, but it is a heavyweight fight between two of the best teams in the sport, both historically and currently

Tonight’s preview is going to be a bit different than the others, primarily because reciting who and what the Tar Heels are isn’t only redundant, it’s a waste of perfectly good pixels. We’ll run down the starting lineups, but this is going to be a team game and not a bunch of individuals out there. I’ll highlight any matchups where one team or the other has a significant advantage, but these are two bluebloods with a ton of talent between them

Season so far for North Carolina:

Season record: 6-2, (0-0 conf.)

North Carolina has had a couple of perplexing losses so far this season. They lost by eight to Butler, 74-66 at a neutral site, which may not be all that perplexing (Butler is, as we know, a quality team). They also lost to a good but not great Iowa team by five in Chapel Hill, a head-scratching win that nobody saw coming.

On the positive side of the ledger, they have convincing victories against the UCLA Bruins, Kentucky’s next opponent after UNC, on a neutral court, and they also beat Florida on a neutral floor. Their most recent victory was against a worse-than-average East Carolina team in Chapel Hill, 108-64

Series history

North Carolina’s history with Kentucky is not particularly long at only 36 games, but it has the notable distinction of Kentucky on the short end of the won-loss record, 13-23. That 10-game deficit is a source of significant angst for long-time Wildcats fans. In the John Calipari era, Kentucky is 3-2 with the Tar Heels. North Carolina has some fairly long multi-year winning streaks against Kentucky; 5 in a row from 2004-2009, and 6 in a row from 1975-1995.

Matchups

Front court

North Carolina matches up reasonably well against Kentucky. Depending on who Kentucky starts for the first unit, the Tar Heel starters go 6‘9", 6‘9", and 6‘6". They also have a starting player (Justin Jackson) who is 6‘8" and swings between guard and forward. All things considered, the Tar Heel starters are about the same size as Kentucky, or slightly smaller depending on who the Wildcats start at the three.

Off the bench, Isaiah Hicks and Theo Pinson provide great depth and solid size.

Overall, Kentucky’s depth will take a toll on the Tar Heels, although without Alex Pothress, it will be a lesser tool. Both Willie Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns are taller than their UNC counterparts, and if Trey Lyles moves to the first platoon, the Wildcats will be bigger, but not a lot bigger, than North Carolina.

Marcus Lee will have to match up with some slightly bigger guys in the middle when he’s in, but nobody, not even Meeks, will be able to handle Dakari Johnson on the inside. Depending on what Calipari does with the second platoon, Derek Willis could get a chance to be a big-time contributor, and he matches up well with North Carolina’s three men size-wise, but J.P. Tokoto is much quicker and more athletic.

Back court

The Tar Heels have good size in the back court by virtue of Justin Jackson and Theo Pinson. Britt and Paige are much smaller, however, than Andrew Harrison.

Aaron Harrison will have probably his only size mismatch of the year with Jackson, and it will be virtually the same for Devin Booker. Tyler Ulis will be a major problem for Marcus Paige because of his relentless defense, but Paige will be able to shoot over him whenever he wants on offense.

Bench

Kentucky, even with Poythress down, has a deeper, more talented bench than UNC.

Analysis

This game will be all about whether or not North Carolina can get out in transition. If they do, they have a solid chance to upset the Wildcats, because they will take away Kentucky’s greatest strength — their half-court defense. That is surely what Roy Williams will want to do, and if the Harrisons have trouble keeping up with the North Carolina guards in transition, you will surely see a lot of Tyler Ulis, because Harrison, as is his wont, will get into foul trouble.

But if the Wildcats deny the Tar Heels transition, it’s going to be very difficult for UNC to win this game. They simply don’t have enough offense even for average teams, and against what looks to be a legendary defensive team in Kentucky, it will be really hard for North Carolina to find scoring opportunities unless they suddenly find their shooting eye and start making threes.

UNC is not the kind of team that forces a lot of turnovers, but they do get into passing lanes and will cause a few in the course of their normal defense, which really exerts itself early in each possession and then tends to wear down, counting on the inside size to handle breakdowns much like Kentucky does. That won’t work out well against the Wildcats, because Kentucky is simply better at that game than UNC, and they don’t break down as much.

Overall, Kentucky sits at about a 10.5-point favorite in Rupp Arena and deserves to be. In Chapel Hill, this game would be closer to a 5-point game, but UK would still be favored to win. Even the loss of Alex Poythress does not provide enough opportunity for the Tar Heels to overcome the size and overall depth of Kentucky unless they play a different game than we’ve seen so far, or Kentucky is bereft of passion due to the loss of their teammate. I don’t think either one is likely.

We know Alex Poythress is out. We don't know if Tyler Ulis or Devin Booker are as well. Let's hope not.

With the sudden loss of Alex Poythress for the season and minor injuries to both Devin Booker and Tyler Ulis, the North Carolina game has suddenly morphed into something of a "red alert" situation. Kentucky’s calling card this season has been ridiculous depth, and even with all three players out, the Wildcats are still hardly in deep trouble when it comes to depth — they still have enough for most normal teams.

But this is not a normal team. The way Kentucky has been used to playing is giving everything they have for four minutes or so, then taking rest. With depth becoming an issue, they won’t be able to do it that way anymore. The players are going to have to be a little more careful how much and when the expend energy.

Now, I get the feeling that both Tyler Ulis and Devin Booker, one if not both, will be available for the North Carolina game. Calipari could afford to be very careful against the Columbia Lions, although the Lions gave a very good account of themselves on Wednesday. Holding Ulis and Booker out was quite likely precautionary to let their minor dings heal up for Saturday, so they can be as near 100% as possible.

In the unlikely event that Ulis and Booker will be unavailable as well as Poythress on Saturday, that could obviously have a major effect on the team in a negative way. Yes, Dominique Hawkins and Derek Willis are both ready, willing, and fully capable of rushing into the breach and keeping the levee from breaking, but they will have to bring more than we’ve seen previously if they are to replace the production of the two guards, and neither of them is capable of replacing Poythress to any meaningful degree other than as a warm body. Physical freaks like Poythress just don’t come around every day.

If there is an upside to having no Poythress and more Willis, it’s that Willis is a more confident shooter from the perimeter, and right now we need better perimeter play. The problem is, Willis is not yet a great defender like Poythress, and North Carolina will try to exploit that. As far as Hawkins is concerned, he brings defensive pressure but just isn’t as useful on offense as either Booker or Ulis.

Having one less big person available also means Kentucky has to be a little more careful when it comes to fouls. UK has pretty much been playing as hard as they can and letting fouls come where they come, but with a significant piece of that puzzle now gone, it will require a minor adjustment in the front court.

But the real adjustment would be in the back court, if Ulis and Booker are unavailable. All of the sudden, you’re down to one point guard and two combo guards (Aaron Harrison and Hawkins), and that’s not where the Wildcats need to be from an efficiency standpoint. It probably means a lot more minutes for Andrew and a few more for Hawkins, and with Andrew’s propensity to foul, that gives me some minor indigestion.

Let’s just hope Booker and Ulis are available. If so, I think we can minimize the impact of Poythress’ loss as much as it is possible to so, and give Kentucky their best chance to win. If all three are down, this game gets a lot more interesting, and it is always plenty interesting enough without any injury impact.

‘Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la, la la la la. Is December 13th too early to enjoy the holidays (specifically Christmas)? UNC seems to be this year’s version of the gift that keeps on giving, if you’re interested in scandals.

I am not usurping Glenn's preview of the game as he always does. I'm just offering a different perspective. Also, I'm not going to get into North Carolina's problems. There's plenty of info about that all over the sports media that isn't the NCAA or the major television media outlets. I don't think Kentucky fans should be pointing fingers considering our own problems in the past. This is about a basketball game between two of the elite programs in college basketball.

I relish the series between these two teams because UNC ranks 3rd in all time wins with 2,120. There are four Elite programs as defined by winning more than 2,000 games. Kentucky, of course leads with 2,150. Kansas has 2,133 and Duke is 4th with 2,035. Just for the record, UCLA has 1,789 (7th), Indiana ranks 10th with 1,743 and Louisville is 11th with 1,736 all time wins. Don't look for any team to come close to Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina and Duke over the next 10 years or so.

As a Kentucky fan, I am very pleased to say that the Wildcats will have played two of the three other elites this year during the regular season. And, while UK has entered into a contract with UCLA (home and home) beginning next year, I wish Kentucky and Duke could get a series going on a neutral court. Home and home would not make any sense due to the size of Cameron Indoor Arena. Playing Duke on an annual basis at Madison Square Garden would be awesome. Back to UNC.

North Carolina's last game before the visit to Lexington, was a 108-64 victory over East Carolina on December 7th. Kentucky played on the same day and beat Eastern Kentucky 82-49. ECU left the Dean Dome with a 4-5 record. EKU left Rupp Arena with a 4-3 record. Are either of these games indicative of the UNC-UK matchup? That would be an emphatic "NO." You have to wonder, though, if Kentucky's game against Columbia or North Carolina's week of practice is more beneficial.

I hate the cupcake games because Kentucky plays to the level of its competition which means the Wildcats pretty much suck in most of the cupcake games. The game against Columbia was no exception. The Cats came out flat as a pancake and looked absolutely terrible. They played with hands of stone, fumbling passes that they would normally catch. Frankly, they look bored, knowing they were going to win no matter what.

Kentucky isn't the only school to play awful against cupcakes. Just look at Michigan. The Wolverines have lost their last two games to New Jersey Technical Institute and Eastern Michigan at home. Louisville played a stinker in a win over Cleveland State at home. North Carolina also had a stinker in the first game against North Carolina Central. I wish the cupcakes were in the preseason exhibitions rather than in the regular season. That way, these smaller schools could still get their paychecks, but the larger schools wouldn't be able to use the games to pad their stats.

So, how do the 6-2 Tarheels match up with the 10-0 Wildcats? You can go to Statsheet.com for a pregame comparison which also includes the Four Factors. You can match UK's Defense vs Carolina's Offense. You'll have to sort to get the Four Factors. Or, you can find them in Glenn's preview of the game.

According to Statsheet, Kentucky ranks #2 in the RPI and Carolina ranks 32nd. Kentucky's strength of schedule ranks 30th while UNC's ranks 31st. Neither has played an away game. Kentucky is 2-0 against the A/P Top 25 and 4-0 against the RPI Top 50. North Carolina is 0-1 against the A/P Top 25 and 0-2 against the RPI Top 50. North Carolina's two losses came at the hands of Butler 66-74 at Atlantis and Iowa 55-60 at home.

As I said, the pre-game Four Factors are somewhat misleading because they are too close and give the impression that UNC matches up well. They don't because the four factors tend to match offenses. Kentucky has won with defense, not offense. Kentucky can't throw a rock into the ocean, yet they manage to win by a wide margin. In spite of Kentucky's lousy shooting, the Wildcats are first in scoring margin (31.8 ppg) compared to UNC's 17.8 ppg which ranks #23.

Kentucky leads the nation in scoring defense and UNC is tied with Santa Clara at 137th in the NCAA. Kentucky ranks 2nd in Blocks per game and UNC is tied with Syracuse at 19th with 6.1 blocks per game. If you look at the Four Factors for UNC' and UK's opponents, I think you get a better feel for how this game will play out. Take a look.

Remember, this is how the opponents have fared and Kentucky has clearly done a much better job defensively when it comes to each team's Four Factors for opponents. You could also look at the opponents points per possession. Kentucky is holding their opponents to 0.68 ppp while North Carolina holds their opponents to 0.88. If Kentucky can maintain the 0.68 ppp for the season, the Wildcats will set another national record.

Kentucky's depth is the issue that North Carolina will have to deal with. The Tarheels have five players who average 20 minutes or more per game. They are Marcus Paige (30.125), J.P. Tokoto (27.375), Justin Jackson (24.375), Kennedy Meeks (23.0) and Brice Johnson (20.25). They have another three who have averaged more than 10 minutes per game. They are Isaiah Hicks (15.375), Nate Britt (14.875) and Theo Pinson (14.875). Basically, The Tarheels are eight deep. All eight have started at least one game. Paige and Meeks are their most dangerous players, in my opinion.

While everyone talks about Kentucky's platoons, the depth is really twelve deep. Willie Cauley-Stein leads UK in minutes per game, followed by the Harrisons and Alex Poythress. While Poythress had to lay out two games due to illness, Dominique Hawkins stepped in for him. Hawkins has been the 11th player in the two platoon system. The other in the twelve deep is Derek Willis. The Blue Platoon averages 19.730 minutes per game and the White Platoon averages 15.800 minutes. Please note that I've included Hawkins on the Blue Platoon and Willis on the White Platoon just to keep things simple.

Can North Carolina win? Sure they can. They will have to play at their highest level and Kentucky will have to have one of their worst defensive games of the season. That's just the way it is. Vegas says Kentucky by ? What do you, our very informed readers, think?
