Honor is satisfied as the Wildcats avenge their loss earlier this year to Robert Morris.

This was the kind of game Kentucky fans probably hoped for last season, but that never was going to happen then. It did happen now as Kentucky avenged last year's shocking upset by Robert Morris in a convincing manner.

Good effort by the Robert Morris Colonials. They were always going to be out-manned and out-talented in this game, and their best hope, perhaps only hope, was to out-hustle the Wildcats and catch them on a cold shooting night. Alas for them, neither eventuality came to pass, and RMU simply could not get anything inside at all over the taller, longer Wildcats. Good luck to them the rest of the season.

For Kentucky, this game was an improvement over the prior five in almost every respect, particularly on defense. No, the 'Cats did not play great defense except comparatively, but at this point in the season, that's their real foe — the last game they played. The Wildcats continue to improve defensively, although the offense looked a little herky-jerky at times tonight, it was quite effective against RMU.

Here are the stats for your perusal.

Team observations

The defensive intensity was definitely up a notch or two from the last few games. That's a hopeful sign, but it is still far from what we can reasonably call "good." At this point in the season, though, I am going to say it was comparatively excellent.

I thought the passing was good tonight, but a couple of times Kentucky seemed to over-pass just a bit.

Turnovers were a bit of a problem, but let's not get to hasty here. RMU is a small team with active hands, and many were just good defensive plays on their part.

Where Kentucky is continuing to go wrong is dribbling the ball into traffic. This is a hard habit to fix, as when you are in high school, you can do that and get away with it most of the time. In college, you manifestly cannot, not against an experienced team with quick hands. They need to learn this.

Transition defense was markedly better.

Transition offense was better also, but in my judgment, it was too rare. I also thought that we were very slow getting into the half court offense, and that frustrates me. If you can get the ball moving before the defense is fully organized, your chances of scoring go way up per possession. Kentucky has to fix this.

This team rebounds like no other I can ever remember at Kentucky, except maybe the Suffocats.

Free throw shooting is about where it should be, but the first half was much better than the second. I think, and somebody mentioned this in the comments, that tired legs are affecting FT shooting later, and perhaps this is so. All the more reason to make them early in the game, I guess.

Kentucky had 20 assists tonight, which is way, way better than the 7 they had against the Michigan St. Spartans.

Player observations

Aaron Harrison has to get the game ball. His line was stellar, with 28 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, a block, 2 turnovers and a partridge in a pear tree. He looked much more comfortable tonight than against the Spartans.

Willie Cauley-Stein had almost as impressive a line as Aaron: 7 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 4 blocks and 2 turnovers. He really was in seriously considered over Aaron for the game ball, but I thought Aaron edged him out.

James Young had another good game, although he continues to shoot the ball poorly from the arc. 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 3 turnovers. His perimeter shooting will improve, don't worry.

Julius Randle was, as usual, a beast. Another double-double with 10 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks and 3 turnovers. He could have had 30 and 20, even though RMU tried triple-teams to get the ball out of his hands.

Andrew Harrison played very well, even though his stats are pretty pedestrian — 8 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists 1 steal and 2 turnovers.

Dominique Hawkins had a heck of a game. He really played good defense, he made some very nice plays including a great lob, and a couple of nice cuts to the basket. He really helped in many ways. 4 points, 2 rebound, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 volleyball-spike block, and ... zero turnovers.

Marcus Lee started and did his job — he got the tip, as well as 2 points on his only attempt, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 blocks.

Alex Poythress kind of reverted to the old AP. He played a bit out of control, didn't defend that well, and wound up with only 12 minutes. He had 2 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 turnovers.

Dakari Johnson played fine. He had 8 points, 3 rebounds and a turnover. I would have like to see more rebounds.

Derek Willis, E.J. Floreal, Jarrod Polson and Jon Hood all played cleanup minutes, and all of them played pretty well. Willis scored 6 points, and Floreal had a nice dunk.

Overall, this was just exactly what all of us were hoping for — a big improvement over Michigan St. and a payback for the loss we suffered at the hands of RMU last season. Honor is satisfied, and improvement in most facets of the game was realized. Happy days.

RMU is one of the two toughest teams Kentucky will face until they play Providence on December 1st, and it will be interesting to see if Calipari can motivate them to play hard though this stretch with a combination of the bench and other methods known only to him and the Wildcats coaching staff. Clearly, starting Lee at the five really motivated WCS, as he had maybe his best game all year.

Next up: <strike>Cleveland St.</strike> University of Texas-Arlington on Tuesday.

The first half showed us that Kentucky has made a bit of a move in improving. Let's hope it keeps up.

I don't think any Kentucky fan can be disappointed by what they saw in the first half. Kentucky defended, they shot the ball well, and are starting to get a handle on the fast break. In other words, all we can ask after a disappointing loss to Michigan St. last week.

Willie Cauley-Stein may only have 4 points, but he has done everything else, with 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Aaron Harrison is also having an excellent game, as is James Young. this team, right now, is giving us exactly what we needed to see this game. It doesn't hurt a bit that we are beating up on a team that knocked us out of the NIT last season.

The Wildcats welcome Robert Morris to Rupp Arena tonight for a revenge game.

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen of the Big Blue Nation, to the A Sea of Blue Live Game Thread for the Robert Morris Colonials vs. Kentucky Wildcats. This, as you are well aware, is a rematch of the 2013 opening round of the NIT, which Kentucky famously lost to the Colonials, 59-57. I am sure that the returning Wildcat players remember that particular affair with something less than enthusiasm.

But that is the past, and the past of a very, very different Kentucky team. Coming off the difficult loss to the Michigan St. Spartans, this is by no means a cupcake game for Kentucky. Even though the Wildcats are bigger, stronger, and for the most part more skilled, RMU is a very solid, well-coached basketball team that didn't come here to let Kentucky take out the NIT game on them.

What I hope to see

Improved play from Kentucky's back court. It was not very good versus the Spartans.

The beginnings of a coherent team beginning to emerge, and an improvement in the coherence of the group as a team.

Good 3-point defense. We need to stay home on the 3 and force RMU's shooters to become drivers.

Attack the paint. I expect this will be no problem at all.

Better zone offense. RMU will have to zone if they hope to win, or utilize a sagging matchup zone like MSU.

Better coaching. I thought Coach Cal was not his best against the Spartans.

That's what we have. Let's hope to convincingly avenge the loss earlier this year, and get this team back on a roll.

Go, 'Cats!

It's payback time for the NIT last season.

Tonight, the Kentucky Wildcats try to avenge their loss in last season's NIT first round to the Robert Morris Colonials. The game against the Colonials is part of the Keightley Classic named in honor of long-time former Wildcats trainer Bill Keightley. It is a tournament that begins with this game and ends on November 27th with the game against the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

The Keightley Classic is a new early-season event featuring four teams ranked between 142 and 226 in Ken Pomeroy'srankings. Robert Morris is one of the better teams in this group if we go according to the ratings. Cleveland St. is the best, and UT Arlington the worst.

History with Robert Morris

Kentucky has played Robert Morris 2 times previous to this one. In 1993, #5 Kentucky defeated the colonials in Rupp Arena 92-67. Unranked Kentucky dropped the first-round NIT game to Robert Morris last season in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.

Karvel Anderson is the leading returning scorer from last season, even though he is coming from off the bench, for the most part. Anderson is a lethal 3-point shooter at .44%, and is the leading long-range sniper for the Colonials.

Lucky Jones was impactful against the Wildcats last season in the fateful NIT game. He was the leading RMU scorer with 15 points, and got ejected late in the game after a flagrant-2 foul on Archie Goodwin. He was the second leading scorer last season with 11.9 ppg, and is also a deadly 3-point shooter at 43%. He also is the leading rebounder for the team.

Anthony Myers-Pate is taking over the point guard spot vacated by Velton Jones last season. Jones had the 4th best assist rate in college basketball last season, so Meyers-Pate has big shoes to fill.

Likely matchups

Starters

Mike McFadden vs. Willie Cauley-Stein — McFadden has good size at 6'8" and 220#, and he is a senior who should lead the team in rebounding this season. McFadden had 9 boards in RMU's recent exhibition victory over Savannah St.

As in the NIT game, Kentucky will have a big advantage on the boards, even more so than in that previous affair. WCS is more skilled, taller, and more agile than his opponent, but McFadden is a tough player who knows all the tricks.

Advantage: Kentucky

Anthony Meyers-Pate vs. Andrew Harrison — Meyers-Pate will have a quickness advantage on Harrison, but Harrison is much taller and stronger, as well as being an extremely skilled player. Harrison will have to watch his handle against Meyers-Pate, but he should be able to get to the rim or shoot over him at will.

Advantage: Kentucky

Karvel Anderson vs. Aaron Harrison — Anderson is a skilled and deadly shooter who will totally test Aaron Harrison tonight. Anderson can shoot the ball from anywhere, and has almost a 50% chance of making it past the 3-point line. Harrison cannot leave him to help, ever, or he will make Harrison pay. Defensively, Anderson will have trouble guarding the bigger Harrison, so this on comes out about even.

Advantage: Draw

Lucky Jones vs. James Young — This is the matchup of the game, and it will be a huge factor in determining how competitive RMU can be against the taller, more talented but less experienced Wildcats. Both these guys are slashers who can shoot from the outside. Young is more talented, but Jones more experienced and almost as big. At this point in the season, I like Jones in this matchup.

Advantage: RMU

Aaron Tate vs. Julius Randle — This is one of those mismatches we won't see much after November. Randle has everything on this kid — he's bigger, heavier, faster, stronger, and more skilled. This is a grotesque mismatch one-on-one, which we won't see much of tonight.

Advantage: Kentucky

Bench

RMU has a fairly deep, experienced bench and they play a lot of players. Charles Oliver is a competent scorer off the bench for the Colonials, and David Appolon provides rebounding and defense.

But compared to the depth and skill of the Wildcats bench, Robert Morris simply doesn't have the horses to make even a dent.

Advantage: Kentucky

Analysis

Kentucky is bigger, faster, and more talented at most positions, but they will get a challenge from Robert Morris. RMU can really shoot the basketball, and any team that can do that will give larger, less experienced teams like Kentucky trouble at times in any game, and it is likely to be no different tonight. Expect RMU to give Kentucky a game in the first half, be down between 8-15 points at half, and gradually fade to about a 23 point loss. At least, that's the high (95%) probability.

As we found out last season, Kentucky cannot take teams like this for granted. With that said, this year's Kentucky team is significantly more talented than last years, has several gifted scorers on the team, and in theory at least, has no weaknesses other than a lack of experience.
