Kentucky held off a game Vanderbilt team in Rupp Arena with bigger plays down the stretch.

Okay, ladies and gentlemen of the Big Blue Nation, we got the win. It was one of those good news/bad news games, but compared to what happened in the last two contests, this was much better in every possible respect.

Congratulations to the Vanderbilt Commodores, who may be young, but when they see blue or orange, they become really tough to beat. I’ve never seen a team that could play two teams so tough, Kentucky and Tennessee, and fail to fire against everyone else. Vandy rained threes on Kentucky all night, and then suddenly found themselves able to score in the paint, too, as they overcame a lead that got as large as 13 points midway through the second half to get it down to four.

Fortunately, the Wildcats made plays down the stretch, and they came from almost everybody. Kentucky shot poorly from the line for most of the game, but made a fair percentage down the stretch of the game to hold on to a four-point victory. Not exactly bracing, but then again, after last week, I would have taken any margin of victory.

Player observations

Willie Cauley-Stein did a lot of very good things tonight. He ultimately preserved the victory with a couple of blocked shots that were very Nerlens Noel-like. 20 points on 8-10 shooting, 7 rebounds (3 offensive), 1 steal, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4-7 from the line. Game ball.

Archie Goodwin had a very good game. Very good indeed. He was active, aggressive, and for the most part, under control. 16 points on 7-14 shooting, 2-4 from the line, 6 rebounds (3 offensive), 3 assists, 2 turnovers.

Ryan Harrow finally broke out of his slump, and for a while, was the best player on the floor. He looked confident, handled the ball with strength, made good decisions and good passes, and was aggressive when required. He kind of disappeared a little in the second half and didn’t shoot the ball well from outside, but overall, a vast improvement. 12 points on 6-9 from the field, 5 rebounds (2 offensive), 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover.

Alex Poythress didn’t play great, but he had his moments, and made one huge 3-point play near the end of the game that was instrumental in preserving the win. 7 points on 3-9 shooting, 4 rebounds, and 0 turnovers.

Julius Mays played more minutes than any other player, and he was excellent. He kept the team under control, he was aggressive, he did a lot of good things that helped the team, but don’t show up on the stat line. He didn’t shoot it well, but when he made them, they were huge. 9 points on 2-7 shooting, 3-4 from the line, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal and 1 turnover.

Jarrod Polson was his usual spunky, scrappy self. He can’t guard too well, but he hustles and he does a good job gutting out tough plays that don’t show up much on the stats, but help a lot. He is starting to shoot the three with confidence. 3 points on 1-2 shooting, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 turnover.

Kyle Wiltjer didn’t have a great game. Once again, the Commodores took advantage of him with their much smaller, quicker lineup. Wiltjer also struggled to get the ball in scoring position. Vandy just seems to have his number. 7 points on 2-5 shooting, 3 rebounds, 1 impressive steal, and 2 big blocks.

Jon Hood played for a minute, but he didn’t play well and didn’t impact the stats.

Team observations

My heavens, but Kentucky’s defense was loathsome. The Wildcats couldn’t guard the perimeter, and then forgot how to guard off the bounce. I lost count of the number of times that Vandy got good, open looks. Scary. The Wildcats are going to have to figure something out soon, because defense like this isn’t beating Mizzou.

I loved how Kentucky executed on offense, for the most part, but there were times in which the Wildcats were once again flummoxed by the Vanderbilt zone.

Kentucky should rebound much better than Vandy. But they didn’t. That’s worrisome.

Turnovers were well under control in this game for the Wildcats. It really helped.

Five blocks as a team without Noel in the lineup is pretty darn good.

Look, we won, but we won in a way that does not inspire confidence. What does help a little is that we saw, for good stretches of this game, a more confident, more composed team than we have seen in a while, with or without Nerlens. The foul trouble we were in was troublesome, though, and it definitely affected the way the team played.

So is this a team that the Selection Committee will feel good about inviting to the NCAA Tournament? I’d have to say not yet. They are going to need more convincing. It would have helped if the ’Cats had crushed Vandy by 20+, but that didn’t happen even though it looked for a while like they might.

Consistency is still an issue. Defense is a big issue. But this team manifestly has not folded. That’s something to celebrate.

Well, we have to like most of what we saw in the first half against the Vanderbilt Commodores, but the last two possessions were alarming, Vanderbilt driving straight to the hoop for a layup both times.

So far, the Kentucky Wildcats have played a really good game offensively, shooting 61.3% as a team from the floor, and holding the Commodores to 41.7%, although the Commodore’s eFG% would be much higher, because they are making 60% of their 3-point shots.

Kentucky is struggling to keep up with the Commodore wings, and that is really hurting the Wildcats. There have been far too many open shots yielded to Vanderbilt by Kentucky, and that has to stop.

Kentucky is also struggling to make free throws, and ironically, the worst FT% shooter in the lineup, Willie Cauley-Stein, made the only two first half charity tosses for the Wildcats. But Ryan Harrow and Archie Goodwin are playing extremely well on the offensive end, and that's the big reason for this lead.

Kentucky is playing very well offensively, but perimeter defensive lapses have kept them from blowing this game open. That has to change in the second half, or the ’Cats are going to wind up in the same uncomfortable position they were in in Nashville.

Let’s get it done, guys. Go, ’Cats!

Join your brothers and sisters of the Big Blue Nation in our game thread tonight. Let's push, pull, throw, or carry these guys to a victory.

After the difficult loss at Tennessee, coming home to Rupp Arena is certainly something the Wildcats are looking forward to. Tonight’s game against Vanderbilt offers the Wildcats a chance to get back to winning, but they won’t make it easy.

Here’s what we need to see out of Kentucky tonight:

Much better ballhandling. Kentucky turned the ball over almost 30% against the Florida Gators and over 23% of the time against the Tennessee Volunteers.

Rebound well. Kentucky rebounded well against the Gators, but it didn’t help them. They got dominated on the glass by the Vols, and it crushed them.

Be aggressive on defense. Kentucky’s defense has been soft as butter, allowing the Gators to shoot nearly 55%, and Tennessee to shoot 63% eFG.

For the love of God, communicate with each other, and listen to what Coach Calipari tells you. Please.

That’s what I have. We need this one. I need to write something about a win. I’m not sure I can make these fingers type out another postmortem like the one against Tennessee.

Go, ’Cats!

The 'Cats and the 'Dores meet for the 183rd time tonight in historic Rupp Arena. There is no doubt who needs this victory more -- the home team.

Tonight, the Kentucky Wildcats take on a familiar foe – the Vanderbilt Commodores – in Rupp Arena. This game, like many from here on out, falls under the rubric of a "must win" contest for the Wildcats.

Vanderbilt comes into this game having won only one SEC game on the road, but it has won two of its last three at home. The Commodores are a young, rebuilding squad that normally wouldn’t seem like a major threat in Rupp Arena, but after the unpleasant thumping the Wildcats suffered at the hands of the Tennessee Volunteers, anything is possible with this group. The loss of Nerlens Noel, plus a generally fragile psyche, has made this team vulnerable in many ways.

History

These two teams are both founding members of the SEC, and have met on the basketball floor 182 times, with Kentucky winning 137 (75.3%) and Vandy winning 45 (24.7%). Consistent with this trend, the Wildcats have won 7 of the last 10 meetings with the ’Dores, their most recent loss being in the SEC Tournament final just last year.

Over the years, Vandy has had several strings of success against the Wildcats, including winning streaks of 3 games or more a total of 3 times in history. The most points ever scored against Kentucky by a Vanderbilt player was 41 points by Clyde Lee in 1965. The most points ever scored against the Commodores by a Wildcats player was 42 points by Louis Dampier in 1966.

TV announcer Barry Booker, a familiar face to those who watch SEC games, made 6 threes against Kentucky in 1987. John Jenkins, who left Vanderbilt as an underclassman for the NBA last year, accomplished the same feat in 2011.

Kedren Johnson is still the big dog for the Commodores this year, averaging 13.7 points/game and 3.9 rebounds. Johnson is not particularly efficient, but he is a good 3-point shooter at 35.8%, and takes the lion’s share of the Commodore 3’s. He also leads the team in assists per game at 3.3.

Rod Odom, Johnson’s front-court mate, is the second-leading scorer at 10.2 pts/gm and second-leading rebounder at 4.2 r/gm. The leading rebounder, odly enough, is 6’5" Kevin Bright from the shooting guard (or wing forward) spot at 5.5 r/gm.

Major reserves include Josh Henderson, Sheldon Jeter and Kyle Fuller. Henderson gives the Commodores excellent size up front, and Vanderbilt can go very big with Odom, Moats, Henderson and Jeter in the game.

The Four Factors favor UK in every statistic, but most of these were accumulated before the loss of Nerlens Noel. I would reckon them much closer in every respect except for free throw rate with Noel down.

Game Analysis

This game is important, mostly because it would be a bad loss that the Wildcats can’t really absorb given their current status as a consensus outsider looking in to the NCAA tournament. Fortunately, Vanderbilt is not a strong team despite the narrow escape Kentucky had down in Nashville, and if the Wildcats can recover even a modicum of their former élan tonight, they should be able to win this game.

But Vanderbilt is absolutely not going to give in easily, and Kevin Stallings is an outstanding game coach with a history of making it very hard on Kentucky, no matter who is on the sidelines here. Stallings lives to beat UK, and getting the split with us this year would be a big boost to his team’s morale. They have nothing to lose in this game as they are not an NCAA or even NIT tournament team, but the Commodores always play extremely hard, and you can’t always say that about the Wildcats this year.

Stallings will mix zone, man-to-man, and pressure defense to try to confound Kentucky’s inconsistent guards. That’s what’s going to be scary, and with Kentucky’s sketchy ballhandling of late, it really is a cause for concern.

Offensively, the Commodores will play the way they always have, trying to get the ball into post position, force the defense to collapse, and kick out for open threes. Vandy is not a great 3-point shooting team, but they are as good as Kentucky is, and that makes them dangerous.

One area where UK should have an advantage even in their depleted condition is rebounding the ball. Vandy is a poor offensive rebounding club, and while UK isn’t a behemoth of that stat, they have been much better than the ’Dores. Vanderbilt shoots the ball adequately well from both 2-point and 3-point range, so the Wildcats must be stronger on defense than they were against Tennessee. For the record, the Commodores played much closer against the Volunteers both times than Kentucky did last time.

The game favors Kentucky, especially at home, and the line is UK -11. Kentucky has been a master at failing to cover the spread this year, so if I were a betting man (and I am not, at least on college sports), I’d definitely take Vanderbilt and the points.

UK needs this game badly, and I have no idea what would happen to the team if they somehow lost this. It’s a situation I don’t really care to contemplate. If it happens and you don’t see a postmortem for a while, you’ll know it’s because I simply don’t have the words.

Here are today's Game Notes as the Kentucky Wildcats take on the Vanderbilt Commodores at Rupp Arena in a must win SEC contest.

With the Kentucky Wildcats (17-8, 8-4) preparing to do home court battle with the Vanderbilt Commodores (10-14, 4-8) in a must win contest for the 'Cats (that's getting old), here are your Game Notes:

Kentucky leads the all-time series with Vanderbilt 137-45, with the 'Cats posting a 76-14 mark against the 'Dores in Lexington.

Kentucky has won six of the last eight meetings between the two schools, and the 'Cats beat Vandy in Nashville 60-58 on January 10. In that game, Ryan Harrow led Kentucky with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, 2-of-5 from long range. Harrow also dished out four assists and recorded one steal. Additionally, the game ended with a bit of controversy as Nerlens Noel was credited with a made field goal with 17.3 seconds remaining although the ball seemingly went in the basket after the shot clock reached :00 -- Noel finished the game with 13 points (6-8 shooting), seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 34 minutes of play. Willie Cauley-Stein netted seven points, eight rebounds and four blocks in 30 minutes of action.

Vandy head coach Kevin Stallings is 10-19 versus UK in his career.

Vanderbilt ranks 320 out of 347 schools in NCAA DI basketball in terms of roster experience (per kenpom.com), while UK checks in at 337.

Vandy's 15 man roster boasts only two upperclassmen, juniors Kyle Fuller and Rod Odom.

Three Commodores were drafted in the first 31 picks of last season's NBA Draft, the most in school history -- Guard John Jenkins was selected 23rd by Atlanta, big man Festus Ezeli was picked 30th by Golden State, and forward Jeffery Taylor went 31st to Charlotte.

Of Vanderbilt's shot attempts this season, 42.7 percent are of the three-point variety, 16th highest in the nation, and 38.3 percent of the Commodore's points come from beyond the arc, fourth most nationally.

In Vandy's eight league losses, one was an overtime loss (to Ole Miss), one was by four points (to Alabama), one was by two points (to UK), and two of the Commodore's losses were by one point each (to Tennessee and LSU).

This season, Vandy had to replace its top six scorers, equating to 88 percent of its scoring output. Kedren Johnson, who averaged 3.1 points per game last season, was the 'Dores leading returning scorer.

Johnson is the most improved scorer in the SEC, raising his scoring average from 3.1 points to this year's average of 13.7 points per game. Johnson also led the 'Dores in scoring in UK's first match-up with Vandy, netting 18 points on 8-of-19 accuracy, 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Johnson was named Tennessean Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons while playing for Marshall County High School. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard turned down Louisville, Florida, Memphis, and Alabama to play for the 'Dores.

Stalling, who has been at Vandy since the 2000 season, is second to Roy Skinner (1959, 1962-1976) in terms of total coaching wins while at the Nashville school -- Stallings has posted 271 wins in his 13-plus seasons, while Skinner won 278 games in his 16 seasons leading Vanderbilt.

In seven of the last nine seasons, Stallings has won at least 20 games.

At Vanderbilt, all 42 of Stallings' senior players have either earned their degree or are currently working toward degree completion.

Vanderbilt is giving up only 60.3 points per game, the schools lowest opponent scoring average since the team gave up 60.5 points per contest in the 1950-1951 season. On the flip side, Vandy is averaging only 59.1 points per game, 58.6 points in SEC play.
