Back-to-back losses for Kentucky as Baylor defeats the Kentucky Wildcats and ends the home winning streak.

I'm feeling ill, and unfortunately not just because of the terrible basketball I was forced to witness for the last two hours. As a result, this postmortem will be fairly short and to the point.

Congratulations to the Baylor Bears for their first-ever win against Kentucky. The Bears did not play particularly well, but they really didn't need to in this game. Baylor has a solid team, and they played much more mature basketball than Kentucky did.

Observations for Kentucky. First the players:

Kyle Wiltjer has been extremely cold the last few games. If he can't make shots, he is no help to us, because he's a defensive liability. Wiltjer missed wide open shot after wide open shot. It was rather pathetic, really.

Nerlens Noel did some good things and bad things, but one thing he could not do is make a layup. He must have missed a dozen short shots. A quick check of stats reveals he was 3-14, and so he missed only 11. But did do a number of very good things otherwise, including 16 rebounds, 7 offensive. Noel also had 6 (!) steals. All he needed to do was make layups to have a monster game -- well, that and defend better.

Archie Goodwin did good things and bad, but he had a team high 5 turnovers to go along with 5 assists. I liked Archie's effort but once again it was unfocused and somewhat wild. No way this team has a chance without him, but he certainly wasn't enough. Calipari said it in his news conference: Archie has the will to win, but he doesn't know how to win yet.

Julius Mays had what I consider to be his worst game. He was 2-8 from three and made a number of bad decisions.

Willie Cauley-Stein did some things well, but he was so weak inside offensively that it was almost embarrassing. But he did some good things, just not enough of them.

Ryan Harrow, despite his horrible shooting, did some good things and got into the paint a lot. But we need so much more from him.

Alex Poythress almost had a good game, but he had five turnovers and way too many defensive breakdowns, and he let several rebounds get away, as well as performing the equivalent of a Morgan Newton self-sack along with Archie Goodwin.

Now, for the game overall:

This Kentucky team is far to laid back to be successful. They take too many plays off, and they show no sense of urgency.

Kyle Wiltjer is really playing badly right now. He gets good shots, but missed them. Today, he missed an obscene number of open three-point shots.

Kentucky did a much better job on the glass this game than they have been, and if there is a bright spot in this loss, that is it.

I have to say that it is extremely unlikely that Kentucky will ever be this cold again. They got great look after great look, inside and outside, and just missed them.

I thought Baylor did a good job of disrupting Kentucky in the painted area. The Wildcats big men have to learn to keep the ball higher.

The officiating in this game was vastly one-sided, and just plain horrible. I don't often complain about the officiating, and I honestly doubt if it actually changed the game's outcome, but it is extremely frustrating to be a fan and see that many bad calls.

This team reminds me that we are spoiled as fans. We expect to win every game after last year, and we have been reminded over the last two games that those expectations are not rational.

The indomitable spirit of last year has not manifested itself yet. Will it? Stay tuned...

I'll be putting up a football thread after this for those of you wanting to chat about Championship Saturday.

Please make it stop.

This Kentucky Wildcats team is driving me crazy with the number of plays they simply take off or do something incomprehensibility stupid. There just doesn't seem to be any upper limit to the number of mistakes this team can make per minute played.

Yet, somehow, Kentucky is only down five. Any year but this year, I wouldn't be worried. But I am now officially worried.

Today's Elite Eight rematch between Baylor and Kentucky is a game Kentucky should win, but could lose.

Today, the Baylor Bears invade Rupp Arena to take on the Kentucky Wildcats.

Baylor comes into this game off a loss, just like Kentucky. Baylor lost at home last Saturday to the College of Charleston, and has had a week to prepare for the Wildcats. Conversely, Kentucky just lost to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish two days ago. Both teams are in need of a win.

To win today, Kentucky must:

Rebound. If UK continues to lose the rebounding battle, this is going to be a long season.

Be patient. Zone offense requires patience, and Kentucky showed precious little against Notre Dame.

Recognize the defenses, and exploit its weaknesses. Baylor will switch between zones, and even some man-to-man. Kentucky must recognize the defense and attack it intelligently.

Listen to Coach Cal. I think that too many times last game, UK was operating off the script.

Compete. Last game, Kentucky did not compete for anything, and they got thrashed because of that.

It would suck to go on a two-game losing streak this early in the season, so let's not.

When you're down with the flu, even the simplest things, like getting up before 10:30, checking the game time the day before, or asking someone to help you become major obstacles. Unfortunately, I didn't clear even one of the three, so today's pregame will be very short.

After the beat down in South Bend by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, I think it's safe to say that Kentucky flunked their early-season exam. That makes today's game against the Baylor Bears, our Elite Eight opponent from last year all the more important.

Kentucky is undefeated in 7 attempts against Baylor, and the first meeting between the two teams was in 1946. One interesting historical note was that the 1948 Kentucky Wildcats, which won not only the NCAA Tournament championship but also the 1948 Olympics, beat Baylor both in the NCAA Finals and also in the Olympic trials.

Players

Baylor loses a ton from last year in Perry Jones III, Quincy Miller, Quincy Acy and Anthony Jones. These three players accounted for most of Baylor's scoring and rebounding last season.

But Baylor does return a number of quality players, among them Pierre Jackson at point guard, a guy who figures to give UK no end of trouble today, along with Corey Jefferson at forward, A.J. Walton at shooting guard, Isaiah Austin at center, Brady Heslip at guard, and Rico Gathers at forwards.

Kentucky is the more efficient offensive team so far this season. Baylor is a significantly better offensive rebounding team, which is the major concern for this game. Neither team turns the ball over much, and Kentucky gets to the line much more than the Bears. Unfortunately, Kentucky does not shoot free throws well at 67%

Baylor, believe it or not, is a significantly worse defensive team than UK, currently ranked 63rd by Kenpom.com, where Kentucky is ranked 29th. Kentucky shoots the three better than Baylor as a team. Despite their size, Baylor shoots more 3-point shots than Kentucky per possession by a significant amount.

Game Analysis

This should be a very competitive game for Kentucky, and if this were held in Waco, I would expect the game to be an even-money proposition. The Bears are as big and long as Kentucky is, very athletic, and extremely deep. They are, fortunately, not as talented. Baylor has, in fact, lost to some significantly inferior teams this year, likely as much a testament to Scott Drew's coaching as not.

If Kentucky does not compete with Baylor on the glass in this game, Kentucky is likely to lose yet again. The Wildcats cannot continue to throw away rebounds through butterfingered incompetence or lack of effort. Even though Kentucky is much more talented than Baylor, the Bears match them athletically, and if they get hot, UK could go on an early-season losing streak.

Kentucky needs to be more patient against the 1-3-1 zone defense that Drew likes to play, and work for the short corner jumpers, or wing kickouts to Kyle Wiltjer and Julius Mays. Kentucky must make 3-point shots against Baylor, because they try to take away as much post play as they can.

Defensively, Kentucky must stay in front of Jackson or pay a terrible price in dunks and kickouts to open shooters. In short, the Wildcats must defend much better than they have.

This is yet another game that Kentucky can lose if they don't rebound well from the Notre Dame loss.
