Alabama continues to dominate the league.

It was a week that most of the top teams were on their BYE week, but Alabama continues to look like the team to beat for the SEC title.

In this one they faced an Ole Miss team that is very dangerous offensively, but they were able to sneak away with the 35-28 victory.

Auburn was fortunate that they were on the positive side of a very controversial call that would’ve put the Rebels up by at least 8-points late.

It was a great game for the Tigers’ rushing attack as they rushed for 277-yards and 3 TDs on the night. Also, Coach O decided to roll with TJ Finley at QB and he put up 265-yards and 2 TDs through the air.

That was exactly the case as the Cats didn’t look motivated to be on the field. It was an absolute putrid performance from the offense.

They only put up 47 passing yards on a team that was giving up over 300 on averaged. However, the Cats strength has been running the ball and they completely went away from it rushing just 23 times for 98-yards.

It was the story of the ground attack for the Tigers as they were able to rush for 220-yards and 2 TDs on the stout front seven of Kentucky.

Missouri needed to end their losing streak to the Cats, and it was obvious that they wanted it more as they look to rebuild this once stout Missouri program.

Deciding where to rank Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri was tough due to their performances against each other. Tennessee beat Missouri at home 35-12, Kentucky beat Tennessee in Knoxville 34-7, and Missouri beat Kentucky at home 20-10. Seeing as how Kentucky had the biggest win and it was on the road, that’s essentially the tiebreaker, for now anyways.

The Cats’ offense leaves Columbia with more questions than answers.

Coming off a program-altering win at Tennessee and facing SEC East favorite Georgia next Saturday, the opportunity for the Kentucky Wildcats to come out flat against Missouri was a possibility.

Well, it happened, and in a way no one saw coming.

Kentucky’s offense had not only their worse performance of the season, but arguably the worst of the Mark Stoops era. The Cats couldn’t muster anything in the passing game, allowing the Tigers to load up the line of scrimmage and bottle up the vaunted UK run game.

Couple this with Missouri’s ability to run the ball and making plays in their passing game against the Cats vaunted defense and the pieces were there for the Tigers to manhandle the Cats 20-10 Saturday in Columbia.

It was a systems breakdown for the Cats (2-3) in all phases of the game, especially on offense. Kentucky was held to 145 yards of total offense, 98 of those rushing. Even worse, the Cats could only muster 45 yards passing against the Tigers (2-2).

The Cats could not find any sense of balance all day long and paid the price for it.

The defense was shredded for 421 yards after Missouri ran 98 plays and 43:18 minutes against it. To be fair, though, the offense did very little to help out the Cat defense. The defense was left out on the field for most of the game, and when they finally got a stop, the offense simply ran a couple of plays and punted the ball back to the Tigers.

There is little time for the Cats to lick their wounds. The Georgia Bulldogs are coming to Lexington on Halloween Saturday.

Will it be Trick or Treat for Big Blue?

The Cats miss a chance to go over .500.

Inconsistency on the offensive end continued for the Kentucky Wildcats during their travel to Missouri. They mustered just three points in the first half against the Tigers, though their defense picked up the slack by holding Missouri to just 10 points in the first half.

After a few series, Kentucky elected to insert backup quarterback Joey Gatewood to try and spark the offense. Of course it was a small sample size, but Kentucky couldn’t gain any traction heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Missouri ran a 21-play opening drive but failed to come away with any points. After a quality stand from their defense, Kentucky offensive coordinator Eddie Gran returned the favor with a three-and-out.

Of course the Wildcats’ defense was absolutely gassed, with Missouri quickly taking advantage by scoring a touchdown on the following drive.

Down 17-3, the Cats responded with a 26-yard scoring strike from Wilson to Josh Ali with 13 minutes left in the game, but those were the final points Kentucky would score. Missouri would tack on a field goal and go on to win 20-10.

After the game, head coach Mark Stoops and several Cats talked about the painful setback in Columbia. Here is a recap of everything they had to say via UK Athletics.

Has Eddie Gran overstayed his welcome?

The Kentucky Wildcats lose a clunker of a game on the road in Columbia against the Missouri Tigers, 20-10.

It was an abysmal performance by the Wildcats, as they were out-gained in every facet of the game, from yards to time of possession to play-calling.

The defense itself did a decent job of holding Missouri to 20 points, despite giving up multiple fourth down conversions, but the offense provided absolutely no help for the defense, in what was one of the worst offensive performances by Eddie Gran and the offense in years, and that’s really saying something.

It was a horrible step back after a big-time win in Knoxville last week, and a severe disappointment. The coaching staff has a lot to answer for in the week to come, especially Gran.

You can not win games by being out-snapped by over 50 plays, it just will not happen.

Kentucky gets Georgia at home next week.

An ugly offensive showing dooms the Cats in Columbia.

The Kentucky Wildcats fell to the Missouri Tigers Saturday afternoon in Columbia by a score of 20-10.

The Tigers got on the board first after a long drive that ate up a lot of clock and ended with one-yard Larry Rountree rushing score. Kentucky responded with a 50-yard field goal by Matt Ruffolo, but Mizzou came back with a field goal of their own to make the score 10-3 at the half.

After the break, the offense couldn’t get anything going and Mizzou took a 17-3 lead near the end of the third quarter on another Rountree rushing touchdown.

However, once Kentucky started pounding the ball in the ground game, the Cats started moving the ball in the fourth quarter. They got deep into Mizzou territory and Terry Wilson threw a dime to Josh Ali to cut the lead to 17-10.

However, after UK forced a three-and-out on the next drive, they also went three-and-out after they pulled Chris Rodriguez Jr. and brought AJ Rose back in. Mizzou then drove right down the field for a field goal to take a 20-10 lead with three minutes left and effectively end the game.

Next up, the Cats will return to Lexington to take on the Georgia Bulldogs.

John Schlarman did not travel with the team

The most unfortunate news today was that offensive line coach John Schlarman did not travel with the team to Columbia.

There was no news release on why Schlarman didn’t make the trip, but we all should hope and pray that everything’s okay. Everyone knows he’s dealt with cancer since last year, so hopefully we get a positive update soon.

Some things are bigger than football. Keep Coach Schlarman and his family in your prayers.

Kavosiey Smoke was available

Smoke has missed the last two and a half games with a rib contusion and there was no word on when he’d return to the team. Supposedly, he was available today, but he did not see any action.

The Cats have missed his explosiveness on offense as said offense was nonexistent today. Smoke was averaging a robust 7.6 YPC, albeit in a small sample size, before he was injured. It’s safe to say Kentucky has missed his production.

The offense was dead in the water

Well, that was one of the poorest offensive showings I’ve seen in quite some time. Kentucky tried Terry Wilson, they tried Joey Gatewood, and it just didn’t matter. They couldn’t get anything going.

First off, it should be clear that Chris Rodriguez is the best running back on this team and should get 25 carries per game. Anything else is coaching malpractice. AJ Rose should not be starting anymore. He’s good at certain things, but Rodriguez should be the feature back at this point.

Second, it doesn’t matter who’s playing quarterback because both players are runners who are limited at throwing the ball. But it’s not only that, there are no receivers on this team that can consistently gain separation from their defender. It’s not just on the quarterbacks, it’s on the receivers, too.

Third, the play-calling has just been abysmal. Kentucky came out and threw the ball three times on the opening possession, which led to a three-and-out.

Look, Mizzou’s run defense has been solid this season, but they haven’t had teams try to run the ball on them because their pass defense had been so bad. Run the ball until they stop you.

When the Cats finally did start pounding the ground game to start the fourth quarter, they scored their first touchdown, but it was too little too late and too much AJ Rose.

There was a huge disparity in time of possession

Time of possession was the name of the game in this one. The Cats pride themselves on winning games by controlling the ball and dominating on defense.

Well, the Tigers took that page out of UK’s book today as they dominated the time of possession. They didn’t score a ton, but they controlled the clock and won the game with long drives that ate up all the time by a 43:10 - 16:50 margin.

Kentucky just couldn’t get the stops when they needed to.

It doesn’t get any easier next week as UGA comes to town. Something has to change on the offensive side or this team has no chance of even finishing the season .500.

It was a disappointing game to say the least, but now it’s on to the next one and let’s hope for a big bounce-back.

Schlarman has been battling cancer for the last two years.

The Kentucky Wildcats will be without offensive line coach John Schlarman for today’s contest vs. the Missouri Tigers.

Prior to kickoff, UK announced that Schlarman did not travel with the team to Columbia, though a reason for his absence was not given. Offensive coordinator Eddie Gran will coach the offensive line today.

Schlarman, who played on the UK offensive line from 1994-97 and has been the offensive line coach since 2013, has been battling cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer of the bile ducts since the summer of 2018. He has yet to miss a game and has coached some of the best Wildcat offensive lines in program history, and they’ve once again been among the nation’s top o-lines this season.

Following last week’s win over Tennessee — Kentucky’s first victory in Knoxville since 1984 — Schlarman was awarded a game ball by head coach Mark Stoops. Schlarman also gave a fiery pregame speech that you can see in the video below.

Hopefully, this is nothing serious and Schlarman is in good health, but this news is a bit concerning since there’s been no reason given as to why he was unable to travel. Our thoughts and prayers are with Schlarman and his family.

Elsewhere, Kentucky did get some good news today as running back Kavosiey Smoke is in uniform and able to go today. He missed the last two games due to a rib injury suffered vs. Ole Miss. in two games, he has 12 runs for 91 yards and a touchdown. He’ll likely play behind A.J. Rose and Chris Rodriguez Jr., who’ve been getting the bulk of the running back snaps recently, but it’s still good to see Smoke is healthy and able to play again.

The Cats and Tigers go head-to-head in this Week 5 SEC matchup

The Kentucky Wildcats (2-2) take on the Missouri Tigers (1-2) in Columbia at 4 pm ET on SEC Network. You can stream the game online at Watch ESPN or with a free trial of fuboTV.

This matchup tends to bring a good game every single year since the Tigers joined the SEC. With that said, this year the Cats are coming into the game as 3.5-point favorites after the line dropped from six earlier in the week.

Kentucky’s defense has been on a roll over their last two games. 10 turnovers, nine interceptions and three pick-sixes is quite the stat and I don’t see this unit slowing down any time soon.

As for Missouri, it’s been a rocky start to the season. After taking consecutive losses to Alabama and Tennessee, they beat LSU 45-41 and then had their game against Vandy postponed.

Considering the Tigers lost to Tennessee 35-12, you have to like UK’s chances if they come ready to play and aren’t caught looking ahead to next week’s clash with No. 5 Georgia. Also, we all remember the Cats’ rushing attack last year against Missouri where Lynn Bowden torched the defense for 200+ yards. They’ll need another big game on the ground to pull off what would be their first road win.

The time before that? Terry Wilson to C.J. Conrad happened.
