Just win, baby.

The Kentucky Wildcats are now 2-0 in SEC play after a wild in over Georgia on Tuesday, 78-69.

It was a game that saw the young Cats have a near-meltdown in the first half, allowing the Dawgs to go on a 11-3 to take a nine-point lead into the final seconds before Ashton Hagans hit a big three to put it at 37-31 going into halftime.

From there, both teams would battle back and forth before the Wildcats finished the game on a 28-14 win to pull out the nine-point victory.

On the game ..

”Well, they came out, Tom had them ready like he always does, and we got in foul trouble. This is one of the few teams that has shot more fouls than we have in a game. And then, not only that, we missed five in a row. We’re one of the best free-throw shooting teams in the country. But, we had foul trouble. The end of the half was kind of--we don’t get a rebound, one of my freshman just gets knocked out of the way and it’s an and-one and we get beat on a back door by another freshman. What I did in the second half, just so you know, three guards and the two fresh big guards which were Nick [Richards] and Nate [Sestina] because they didn’t play that much and then I road them. Just said, ‘How much can you play?’

“You know what’s amazing is they don’t want to come out, and I’m good with it. Play. They made the plays, they made the defensive stops. We rebounded the ball. Anytime you win on the road in this league, it’s big. Especially when you walk in the gym and the students are back on campus for the first time and it’s a sell out. It was really hot in there, I don’t know if you guys noticed. I was soaked in there. Our kids fought it and won the game.”

On team assists ..

”Yeah, well, first half Ashton [Hagans] had 10 shots and they were mostly jump shots. What [was he] doing? I said, ‘What are you trying to get 12 shots coming home?’ You average 11 shots a game. You have 10 in the first half. But it wasn’t just him, it was a bunch of us. We wouldn’t pass the ball to each other. When you play that way the game is hard.”

On Immanuel Quickley’s shooting …

”You also have Nate now. So you have Nate, Immanuel, Tyrese, who hasn’t been shooting it as well as he needs to, but Ashton can shoot 3s too.”

On Ashton Hagans and EJ Montgomery playing at home …

”They’re different kinds. Ashton is, ‘I’m gonna show …’ and EJ is, ‘I hope I play …’ Three’s a difference between the two. (Montgomery) is that guy for us. He’s that, ‘Let’s go.’ I think Nick is trying to do everything he can; got away from rebounding a couple balls late, but our guards came up with those balls. Nate played well, which is why EJ didn’t play as much. But we need him to be what he’s capable of doing. He should be the best offensive rebounder, a shot-blocker, a runner; some of the stuff Nick’s doing, dunking around the basket, that should be him. And again, my goal is by the end of the year, that’s who he is.”

On Nick Richards making tough catches that he didn’t used to be able to …

”I didn’t say, ‘No, no, no.’ I said, ‘Easy. EASY! Good pass, kid, good pass!’ “Amazing, right? How about that? He’s getting better. He started playing basketball when he’s 14, so it’s taken him more time – but who cares how long it takes? It’s the point of, can I get to that point where I’m a significant player? And he is now.”

On only making 10 of 20 free throws …

”We won without making free throws today. It’s good to know we can do that.”

On Ashton Hagans playing through his injured ankle …

”I think he didn’t want to practice for two days. His floor game, he is so confident and comfortable in his own skin that he and I are like laughing at halftime. He knows this is his team to run. He knows I’m giving him space because he’s making great decisions. And I’m telling you why else I’m giving him space: Because he is a tough hombre. This guy is physically strong and tough and uses it. So you give him a little space.”

On playing against Anthony Edwards on the Georgia stage ...

”It was amazing especially on the road in front of their home crowd. We had a lot of fun, we couldn’t really talk during the game. After the game we exchanged words, hugged each other said keep doing what your’e doing. See you in a couple of weeks.”

On the caliber and toughness of Edwards ...

”He’s great, he’s really tough to guard especially when he has the green light like that. He has to make plays for that team to win and it’s really hard to guard him. Proud of him, keep working on his game.”

On what this win says about Kentucky ...

”We were very resilient down the stretch. It was a stretch in that first half, I think we were down seven, we came in here and our leaders like Ashton [Hagans], Immanuel [Quickley], and even Nick [Richards] had shots up early and said were good. This is my first road game, me, Kahlil [Whitney], Keion [Brooks Jr.], it was really crazy out there. It was a great experience and we’re ready to get back to the lab tomorrow and get ready for Alabama.”

The Dawgs celebrated too early, while Edwards said Maxey was “too little.”

Tuesday night was a fun one for the Kentucky Wildcats, as they used a strong second half to upend Georgia 78-69 in Athens.

Of course, Hagans had his fingerprints all over this.

Tuesday in Athens was an exhilarating win for a Kentucky team that had yet to face a true road game this season.

Despite facing a sellout crowd in Athens on Pom Pom Night in the house of presumed No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick Anthony Edwards, the young Wildcats showed immense fight and a will to win in what turned into a dogfight of an SEC slobberknocker.

While the Wildcats would go on to win by what looked like a comfortable 78-69 margin, it was far from easy in a game that saw the Dawgs leading for much of the first 30 minutes.

It looked like that would continue for the final 10 minutes when Georgia gained possession off a steal and were on the fastbreak with a 55-50 lead and seemingly about to go up by seven.

But a few inches proved to be the difference between Georgia taking command with under 10 to play and Kentucky going on a 13-2 run to go in front for good, as Ashton Hagans intercepted a Jordan Harris pass that Immanuel Quickley recovered and hit an open Tyrese Maxey for three, cutting Georgia’s lead to 55-53.

This was a massive sequence in the game: pic.twitter.com/Kxrc79HWJM
— Jason Marcum (@marcum89) January 8, 2020

If Hagans misses that pass, it’s likely a 57-50 lead for Georgia and all the pressure in the world riding on Kentucky to make a shot in the ensuing possession. Instead, Hagans recover from his bad pass to make a game-saving INT that led to a triple as part of a 13-2 run that saw the Wildcats go ahead 63-57.

Kentucky actually outscored Georgia 28-14 from that point on en route to a 78-69 victory.

Now, the Cats return home Saturday to face Alabama with a chance to begin 3-0 in SEC play. While that may not sound like anything to brag about, it would be just the fifth time a John Calipari Kentucky team has accomplished this. The other four teams (2016-17, 2014-15, 2011-12, 2009-10) all won 30+ games and made the Elite Eight, while two of them made the Final Four, and the 2011-12 team won it all.

That’s not to say this Kentucky teams will accomplish any of this, but it’s still good company to be in.

The young Cats showed a lot of maturity in their first road game.

The Kentucky Wildcats went into a hostile environment against the most talented player in college basketball, struggled mightily from the free throw line, and somehow found a way to claw themselves to a 78-69 victory.

Many different players stepped up throughout the game. Nick Richards was dominant when on the floor, scoring 17 points and pulling down 7 rebounds in just 25 minutes. Tyrese Maxey took the ball to the rack at will and put up 17 points of his own to go with 8 assists, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocks.

Ashton Hagans played injured, and Nick Richards played through foul trouble, but Maxey and Co. were still able to finish it.

The Kentucky Wildcats beat the Georgia Bulldogs Tuesday night by a score of 78-69.

UK started out fast, but was quickly slowed down by college basketball’s incompetent referees. They went into the half down 37-31 after Nick Richards and Nate Sestina picked up two fouls very early.

And the Bulldogs let everyone know who was in charge going into the break as the players stood on the floor boasting their six-point lead. Like Cal says, we’re everyone’s Super Bowl.

Kentucky took notice. And they came storming back in the second half. Despite the free throw woes, the Cats were able to pull off a solid win in their first true road game of the year.

Next up, the Cats will return home to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday afternoon.

Once the nerves calmed down, he slowed himself down and returned to form.

It was good to see Hagans out there, especially after what looked like an extremely scary injury. He is the engine that keeps this train going.

College basketball officiating is still terrible

I’ve mentioned it over and over, but it can’t be said enough. Something has to change.

It’s making the games hard to watch. Your favorite players get two fouls when they breathe too heavily. Then you push someone blatantly and the referees call nothing.

It has to change. I’m not sure how and I’m not sure what to do, but the NCAA has to do something to improve it.

When fans freak out in the NCAA Tournament because of the officiating that costs their team a chance at a championship, maybe they’ll listen.

Nate Sestina could not guard a brick wall

I love Sestina’s heart. I love his hustle. And I love his energy.

He might be the best pure three-point shooter on the team along with Immanuel Quickley. But he’s becoming a guy that you just can’t have on the court because he’s so bad defensively.

Like I said, I like some things he does. I like him. It’s just becoming unbearable to watch.

He gets in foul trouble because he can’t keep up with guys. They either run right past him and score or run right past him and he fouls.

He has to play because Kentucky needs a big body out there, but I don’t know what you do with him at this point.

Guard someone, hit some threes, and rebound, or don’t play. Period.

Richards has become a staple

It’s no secret that Richards is important to this team, but he’s become a legitimate staple.

His ability to score around the bucket, stretch to the midrange, defend the rim, and rebound is second to none on this team.

We all thought we’d see the sophomore jump from Montgomery. In its place, we got Junior Nick Richards, and it’s been fun to watch.

When he picked up his second foul early in the first half, we struggled. It’s amazing how he went from a five-star recruit, to every game starter, to playing less and less and LESS minutes over his two years, to finally rounding into form this season.

I’m happy for him. I just wish we had another big man that could bask in the glory with him.

Keion Brooks, Jr. will be a star

He show flashes. He was an underrated recruit. It may take 2-3 years to see his full potential, but it’s coming.

Brooks understands his role on the team and right now it’s defense and attack when needed. He hasn’t shown a ton of his ability.

Maybe it’s due to his frame. He’s very skinny in a big’s body. He’s pretty athletic, but he’s also awkward at times. But once he figures it out, he will be a force.

And I’m confident in saying that. Don’t believe it now, but Brooks is special.

Tyrese Maxey did not back down to the Anthony Edwards challenge

Maxey can play with the best of them. He’s got the heart of a lion and he heats up quick.

He can also force shots and struggle at times. But he’s a freshman. It happens.

One thing he hasn’t backed down from, though, is the big stage.

Yes, he went crazy against the Michigan State Spartans and Louisville Cardinals, but this one was different.

Tonight, he went head-to-head with a potential top-five draft pick and he didn’t flinch.

Edwards got his, but so did Maxey. When UK struggled to find offense, Maxey responded.

He’s only a freshman, but he knows how to answer the call.

Enjoy him while you can, BBN.

That was a heck of an effort from the Cats. They struggled at times. They dealt with foul trouble. And they withstood a raucous home crowd in Athens.

But they never wavered. And that’s what separates good teams from great ones.

It sounds like Ashton Hagans will suit up when the Kentucky Wildcats face the Georgia Bulldogs.

From what I'm hearing I do expect Kentucky PG Ashton Hagans, who injured his ankle in Saturday's win vs Missouri, to play tomorrow night at Georgia.
Hagans suffered a low-ankle injury in Saturday’s win over the Missouri Tigers. Initially, John Calipari sounded optimistic about Hagans returning sooner or later.

Then on Monday, Immanuel Quickley said Hagans was feeling good, while Joel Justus said the Georgia native would attempt to practice.

It certainly appears that Hagans’ injury was relatively minor and may ultimately not cost him anytime. As much bad injury luck as this team has had already, it would nice for this one to end up being nothing.

It’s just good to know it won’t sideline him for weeks, if not months, which was feared when he initially went down Saturday.

And a friendly reminder that arguably Hagans’ best collegiate performance was in Athens last year:

The Cats invade Athens looking for win No. 2 in SEC play against a surging Georgia team.

The Kentucky Wildcats are back in action tonight as they take on the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens at 9:00 pm EST. You can watch the game on ESPN and stream it online with WatchESPN.

This is Kentucky’s first true road game of the year, so it will be interesting to see how they respond against a good Georgia team.

The Bulldogs currently stand at 10-3. The three teams they’ve lost to are Dayton, Michigan State, and Arizona State. They are coming off a big win last week against Memphis, so the momentum will be in their favor at home.

However, the Cats are on a roll of their own coming off wins against Louisville and Missouri. In both of those games this team showed the fight that everyone has been looking for. They’re going to need all of that to take down Anthony Edwards and and the Dawgs down in Athens.
