If Ashton Hagans continues to shoot the way he did tonight, the offense completely opens up.

One of the major story lines in this early season for the Kentucky Wildcats has been their sub par shooting from behind the three-point line.

Entering Friday’s game against Mount St. Mary’s, they were shooing a horrifying 21% from deep. But after shooting 40% on Friday and 45.5% on Sunday, it seems the Wildcats are headed in the right direction.

We all knew that Tyrese Maxey could shoot. He showed out right out of the box against Michigan State. After a few lesser performances as of late, he returned to form on Sunday, hitting 4 of 6 from behind the three-point line. He has to make those shots to open up the offense. And according to John Calipari after the game, Maxey has the green light to shoot the ball, especially in transition.

Immanuel Quickley leads the team in three-point percentage (min. 10 attempts) at 37%. He continues to be a consistent threat from deep, and he has proven himself to make wise decision when the basketball is in his hands.

However, the most important development could be the shooting of Ashton Hagans. He shot just 27.5% from three-point range last season, and shooting was a point of emphasis for him in the off season. After starting the season 0/9 from deep, Hagans hit 3/4 on Sunday to show that he can be a threat from the perimeter.

If those three guys can continue to improve their outside shooting, and Nate Sestina can get back to his Bucknell form, the spacing for living legend Junior Nick RIchards to work will be incredible.

Things are starting to come together for this team and it showed on Sunday

Kentucky finally came out and played well for the majority of a basketball game as they beat Lamar 81-56. It was the first time since the Cats demolished Eastern Kentucky several weeks ago that a sustained effort was on display throughout the contest.

Calipari’s team soared out to a 10-0 lead and quickly snatched all of the momentum inside Rupp Arena. Lead by Tyrese Maxey’s 12 points, UK took a 20 point lead into halftime in a game that never really felt close.

It was extremely encouraging to see Kentucky nail seven three-pointers in the first 20 minutes of action. Shooting woes had been plaguing this team early on this season so it was a welcomed sight for Cats’ fans to see long-range shots dropping. Four different Kentucky players made a three in the first half of Sunday’s win. UK finished with 10 threes on the night.

The biggest takeaway once again just might be the continued improvement Nick Richards. The junior center was all over the place and even finished one of the best dunks of his career Kentucky on an alleyoop pass from Tyrese Maxey. Richards was swatting and altering shots just about every time UK was on the defensive end of the floor. He finished the night with 10 points, 13 rebounds, and seven blocks.

Freshman guard Tyrese Maxey stole the show in Rupp Arena on Sunday night. He was hot from deep early and kept pouring in the buckets all night. He finished the game with 21 points on 8/11 shooting.

Coach Calipari was clearly agitated on the sidelines tonight, mostly at the officials, but you can only assume that he was more than pleased with how his team performed on the court. Despite some recent struggles it is evident that this group of guys is improving.

Here is what Coach Calipari and his players had to say after the big win via UK Athletics:

John Calipari

Q. With Tyrese Maxey scoring 21 points, his best performance since the season opener, what do you make out of the way he played tonight?

JOHN CALIPARI: He’s getting better, but again, we need to practice. We—Kahlil (Whitney) needs to practice so that we can coach him and get him to play the way he’s got to play. He did some good stuff today, but he’s still not the comfortable guy he needs to be. Keion (Brooks Jr.) the same. We’ve got to get Nate (Sestina) back to being comfortable and more of a guy that’s, you know, showing who he is; not trying to live up to something because it changes how you play. We didn’t post the ball a ton today. But again, 19 assists: That’s what I’m looking for. Some of the others when we didn’t have big assists, maybe we missed a whole lot of shots – like wide open. We’re starting to make shots. Twenty-two is about what we want to shoot – 20 to 22 3s. We’re playing faster. My teams, to shoot 30 3s, we’re not going to win. You know, getting to the line, we did not post the ball up a ton. Again, offensive rebounding in the second half, we just—the beginning of the second half for 10 or 12 minutes, we just didn’t bring it like we did in the first half. Some of it was we made 3s to stretch out the game, but we also defended. So again, we’ve got a long ways to go. But we have time now. We play next Friday, the following (Saturday). I’ve got practice days. I can get them in there. We can scrimmage and talk through all the things that we’re trying to do on the run. What have we played, five games? Four games? [SID Eric Lindsey: Six.] Oh, six games. We’ve got a lot of games left.

Q. You’re not one to make excuses. How much did the preseason injuries and injuries to EJ Montgomery and so forth set you back?

JOHN CALIPARI: Well, when you’re playing without two veterans in EJ Montgomery and Immanuel Quickley you’re not going to be the same, not with this group, because then you’re playing freshmen who are not ready to be the dominating guys. Even Tyrese Maxey is still learning. You get him in spots on the court where we’re trying to put him, he moves to another spot, and it’s not, you can’t play the way we’re trying to play from that spot. I’m trying to get him to do certain things off pick-and-rolls and he’s not getting it yet. So they go zone, I got to have Ashton Hagans in the game. If I don’t have Ashton in the game against zone, my man, I threw it to him, did you see where we would have thrown it to Ashton? And he took a bounce and just threw it at the rim? He’s learning. Now he made 3s and scored today. He had three assists, I want to see six assists, I don’t want to see three assists. And we put him in position to go do that and he didn’t get it done today. But, you know, guys get injured. We’re not the only team that has injuries and it is what it is. Nick Richards was out for awhile. We were lucky to have Nick against Michigan State. If you remember, I didn’t start him. So we’re healthy now and now it’s time to start taking steps and strides. This may be a little bit early for camp, that we like to call camp. It is a little early, but I’m having that mentality of we’re getting into this, because these kids, they got to be able to fall back on their training or you’re thinking too much. Most of that thinking is stinking thinking. You need to fall back on the training. Well, when you’re playing all these games and you have all these injuries and you’re practicing with six guys, it’s hard to fall back on the training. But I think going forward you’ll see we’ll, we should be better.

Q. I know there was an area early in the second half you weren’t happy with, but you did end up with 10 offensive rebounds after making that a big point two nights ago.

JOHN CALIPARI: We still got guys that aren’t bringing in balls. Like, tipping. You understand, I say two hands. So my man tipped it and tipped it in for them. You tip it from us. You grab the ball with two hands. Offensively, we had a couple down this end and we went to bring them in and they just squirt loose. We have other guys that are so, they’re not reacting to the ball hitting that rim because, again, we haven’t been trained. As the shot is being taken, your mentality is, he’s missing. Not like, I wonder if this will go in so I can go three. No. He’s missing this. And then you’ll react to it. Well, you got to be trained that way. You don’t, they’re not in high school playing that way. They’re playing every minute they can play. If I play bad, so what, I play bad. Now it’s, okay, we got to do this.

I thought Nick did some good stuff. I liked the fact that we blocked shots today. And I told the guys, how are we not blocking shots? We should be one of those teams in our league. But then when you do block a shot, your guards got to get involved because if they block it, you got to come up with the ball, you got to track down on Nick’s man or EJ’s man. So, again, being trained. We’re right now starting to train them on rotations if we get beat on the bounce. Showing them, here’s where you move to. Because they really don’t know. They just all run into the lane and then what happens? 3s. So like I said, look, we played better today. A lot of good stuff today. A lot of good stuff. Of the teams we’ve played, other than Michigan State, this team was as good as any of them, if not better than most of them or all of them. We played better. We had 19 assists, we made shots, we blocked shots. Now, we gave up some baskets that you and I look at and say, oh, man, why? Because, again, it’s one play to my guys. When you’re young, it’s one play. Why is he getting so upset? Okay, now they made another and another. Now it’s an 11-point game instead of 20. Are you good now? Yeah, but it was only one play. That’s the stuff they got to understand. You have to put a premium on every possession. I am playing every possession as though it matters. We’re not there yet. We’re playing, about 60 percent of the possessions we’ll really fight and dig in and play.

Q. When you talk about guys kind of thinking too much right now.

JOHN CALIPARI: Here’s what I liked today. The best thing that happened today. Brad Calipari had 16. But here’s what happened on the 16 he had. He missed two shots, okay? And you know my biggest thing is, I want to see when you miss shots if you can follow it up with a make, because that means you got some mental toughness. He missed two and then he banged the dagger. And believe me, he texted me and says, you know, I missed two before I made that dagger. He knows, that’s the kind of stuff, that’s mental toughness. He had four rebounds too. He played pretty good defense, too, by the way.

Q. On the thinking too much, it seemed like Tyrese Maxey was one of those guys, especially the last few games. Early today, he comes out kind of just letting it fly. You didn’t seem to react frustratedly at all about any of those shots. Did you want him to do that?

JOHN CALIPARI: Here it is. You’re supposed to catch the ball here. That’s why I’m going crazy. Why are you not catching the ball where you’re supposed to? And if you catch it from that spot then dribble back down to that spot. You know, I probably shouldn’t get upset because he doesn’t know. He doesn’t know. And we’re giving -- we, I felt really good walking into the game because we had defined roles way better and much earlier than I have. And for awhile we were playing that way. But all of a sudden I look up, it’s 19-19. It was 15-2. How is it 19-19? And again, it’s one play, it’s, okay, what’s the big deal, why? You expect me to make a play on rebound that every time? I do. If we’re going to be that kind of team, it is going to be a grind because each week we go we’re playing better and better teams. That’s how we kind of do this. So I’m not coaching this game against that score. I’m coaching this team to be prepared for what they got going forward.

Q. How well did Nick Richards perform as a rim protector and as a presence around the basket?

JOHN CALIPARI: No, he was good. We didn’t post him that much. The coaches got on me. We’re trying to get us to pass the ball to one another, so I ran a couple things to him, but most of it he didn’t get the shots. But he blocked, he rebounded. When he gets tired it shows. He’ll just kind of let a guy shoot a layup and you’ll sit there and say, why did he let that guy shoot it? Why didn’t he block it? Because he’s exhausted. I’m not going to go, I’m not in that frame yet. And that’s why Nate Sestina has to play better, that’s why EJ has to play better, so we can get a rotation going. Shove Keion (Brooks Jr.) in there and let him go get some balls.

Q. You talked about the guys relying on their training. I know it varies year to year, team to team, but at what point does that usually happen and how do you know that that happens?

JOHN CALIPARI: Usually it happens after the camp stuff we do. Where it’s really in depth and it’s, we’re training. That’s what it is. You’re not playing as many games. You’re training. This, we have a day off, we have three days, and then another game. And then, but then we have a day off and we have four, five days. So we got eight days between, really, two games. So but this team, again, we’re still trying to figure each other out. We still, there’s a, we get undisciplined at times, both on defense and offense. Instead of just grinding it out, we’re not breaking down. We’re giving them one tough shot. We’re blocking out and rebounding. Every shot that we take it’s a miss and you three go get it. And then if we don’t get it, watch, you can’t jog back. Again, you understand, if you run in there to rebound and you don’t get it, and they get it, you’re next to the man you got to run with. And if he sprints, you got to sprint. So maybe I won’t go in. I’ll stay near the top and I get a five-step lead on him, so I can jog back as he runs. The whole mentality of here, I’m coming, knowing if I don’t get this I’m sprinting back. So we’re trying to do stuff in practice to simulate that. Like, you’re saying, well, isn’t that like ninth, tenth? Yeah, it is. We’re simulating that, like, you can do both. I can’t do both. You either go in or you don’t. But, again, this team has gotten better, shooting the ball better, much more confident in what they’re doing. It’s great to see Johnny Juzang make that shot to pull up, because we’re going to need him to make shots.

Q. I wanted to go back to Tyrese Maxey for a minute. When you guys were tied at 19 and then y’all go on that 22-2 run, when he was making those 3s and settling into that rhythm, how much do you feel like everyone else kind of fed off of that energy?

JOHN CALIPARI: Well, it’s what stretched the game out. Like, those baskets like bang, bang, bang. And he knows, if it’s in transition, he can take it. Like, if we throw it ahead and he’s open in transition, don’t drive it, just shoot that ball. What we were saying in the second half, and he started and he had a drive and threw that lob, now that you made shots, you don’t have to foot fake and do anything. All you got to do is catch it and look at the rim and they’re flying at you, now drive in and get somebody a shot, which he started the half doing. This is all, this is new to what he’s trying to do and how he’s playing. But it’s new to all these guys. I mean, everything is, Well, I used to do this. It doesn’t work anymore, that’s not working, you’re not getting the ball in the basket or you’re turning it over. These are your shots right here. Here’s where you’re making these plays. Everybody on the team is different. This guy can do stuff that you can’t do and you do stuff that he can’t do. So why don’t you do what you do well, we’ll all do this together, make this easy for each other. And that’s a challenge year to year. That’s the challenge throughout the year. How do we become an unbelievable team. Great length, quickness, speed, we can shoot it, we have enough of a post-up game, how do we become an unbelievable team defensively and offensively. It takes reps, it takes experience, which means games. How many have we played? We’re six games in. I’m trying to tell them, Don’t panic, don’t worry about how you play, we’re going to get it right, let’s just keep moving forward, next step.

The Wildcats are getting in a groove now that everyone is healthy.

After a rough couple of games, the Kentucky Wildcats are starting to come alive, and that continued Sunday as they cruised past Lamar 81-56.

The Cats have struggled shooting the ball so far this season, but that wasn’t the case tonight, as they were 10/22 from deep for 45%.

It was another big performance from Nick Richards, as he finished with 10 points on 5/9 shooting, 13 rebounds, seven blocks and one assist. He did so while playing a team-high 35 minutes.

Ashton Hagans continues to play at a high level with his elite defense and is now finding a rhythm offensively. He finished with 15 points on 4/6 shooting, nine assists, three rebounds and two steals.

This performance should have BBN feeling a lot better about this team going forward.

Game MVP

This was a tough decision as the Cats had multiple guys play at a high level. However, the MVP for this one is Tyrese Maxey.

Maxey played really well on the defensive end of the floor but was also making the right reads on the offensive end taking advantage of his opportunities.

He finished with 21 points on 8/11 shooting, 4/6 from three. He also had five rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.

Maxey hadn’t had a big game since his dominating performance against Michigan State, so it was great to see him get back on track.

Hopefully, this will start to become the norm for him as they will need him to play at a high level to reach their full potential.

It was Kentucky’s best overall performance since the Michigan State game to open the season, and that is in large part due to the great shooting performance by the Wildcats. Kentucky hit 10 threes on the night, including hitting seven in the first half.

It didn’t matter. They came out ready to play and despite giving up a lead to begin the game, they answered with a huge run of their own.

Kentucky got out to a 15-2 lead before squandering it to a 19-19 tie late in the second half.

However, they bounced right back with a 22-2 run to end the first half and show their dominance. The three-point shooting in the first half was not only a high for a half with seven threes, but it was a season high.

That was in large part due to the man with an entire section dedicated to him below.

Tyrese Maxey has awoken

The tantalizing freshman awoke from his slumber for a huge game Sunday night.

After struggling following his 26-point performance against the nation’s top team on opening night, Maxey went off against Lamar.

He hit four first-half threes and continued to score at will in the second half.

Maxey might be inconsistent, but he has the ability to light it up on any given night. He reminds me a bit of Malik Monk with his microwave scoring.

Three-point shooting has clearly become a focal point

It’s no secret Kentucky has struggled from deep so far this season. However, that’s clearly become a focal point for UK moving forward.

Coming into Sunday night with only six threes made as a high for a single game so far, the Cats set a season high for threes just in the first half with seven.

That increases in the second half as Kentucky looked to erase any negative memories of their poor shooting.

UK has several capable three-point shooters, so it was only a matter of time before the Cats’ offensive slump ended.

It did just that Sunday night and that’s in large part due to the shooting from behind the arc.

EJ Montgomery has a sweet stroke

EJ Montgomery hasn’t exactly exceeded expectations to this point, but he does have a nice stroke.

He isn’t afraid to pull up from midrange or shoot the occasional three and, honestly, I don’t hate it when he does.

His issues stem from his inability to finish at the rim, but that seems more mental than anything. I expect that to change over time.

But for now, enjoy that sweet stroke from outside.

Kahlil Whitney has to be a two-year player, right?

Kahlil Whitney was ranked as the Cats’ highest ranked recruited on some sites coming into this season, but that’s clearly a long-term projection.

Whitney has elite athleticism and defensive potential, but he packs any basketball IQ whatsoever and can’t shoot.

His midrange game isn’t bad, but his shot is ugly. He also isn’t the quickest other than running in a straight line.

There are worse problems than having a multi-year guy that was expected as a one-and-done, but he probably shouldn’t be in the starting lineup.

Shooting strokes are hard to fix, but sometimes a project player is better than a guy that leaves after a year.

Stay patient, BBN. Whitney’s ceiling is probably something like Hamidou Diallo, but that isn’t terrible if he’s surrounded by shooters. Give him time.

The Cats might return a lot

It’s well know that Cal is bringing in a huge recruiting class — maybe the best ever — next fall.

The only issue with that is that there will be a lot of players that return after this season.

There have been rumblings that Nick Richards and EJ Montgomery are gone no matter what, and the same is probably true of Hagans.

Assuming Maxey is gone, to go with Nate Sestina, that leaves Immanuel Quickley, Whitney, Johnny Juzang, and Keion Brooks as guys that could return.

That’s a lot, especially for a guard/wing heavy recruiting class, but experience is never a bad thing.

However, attrition could be and that’s a possibility with so much talent on one roster. Some guys aren’t meant to be in Lexington and that’s okay. Next season’s team will be LOADED.

It was a solid showing from Kentucky. While the defense came to play, the offense disappeared at times in the second half.

But it’s another win and some marked improvement over the last couple of weeks.

It’s hard to focus on basketball during rivalry week, but we’ve got Thanksgiving and one more game this week before taking on the Louisville Cardinals.

Go Cats and happy Thanksgiving!

The Wildcats seemed to take a few strides forward on Friday in a 20-point victory over Mount St. Mary’s. But it seems obvious, especially if you listened to Coach Cal after the game, that they still have a long way to go. Their next learning experience will come on Sunday as Lamar invades Rupp Arena.

The Wildcats were led in scoring on Friday by a player that is completely new to the team, Junior Nick Richards. Richards has looked like Kentucky’s best player in most of their outings so far, and will have another prime opportunity against Lamar since they only have one player over 6-8.

Immanuel Quickley put up the most efficient game for Kentucky on Friday, his first game back from a one game absence for injury. He scored 13 points in only 22 minutes, hitting 3/4 three-pointers and shooting over 60% from the field.

Kentucky also got back EJ Montgomery following his three-game absence due to an ankle injury. His impact turned out to be a major one, as he finished with a game-high +/- of 29 while notching seven points ans six boards. He also hit a triple early in the second half that sparked the run Kentucky used to put the Mountaineers away after leading just 39-34 at the half.

It was just one game, but it showed how much of a loss Montgomery and Quickley were when Kentucky struggled to do anything well recently. Perhaps having them back will get the Wildcats back to playing at the level they were at when they beat No. 1 Michigan State.

Lamar is led in scoring by senior guard T.J. Atwood, who averages 18 points per game. He has only hit four triples on the season (on 11 attempts), so almost off of his points come from penetration.

Sophomore guard Davion Buster has never seen a deep shot he did not like. He has attempted 46 three-point tries on the season, more than double of anyone on Kentucky’s roster.

Lamar is coming into the game with a record of 4-1, and they actually have two common opponents with Kentucky. The Cardinals defeated Utah Valley on Thursday with a score of 74-68, and took down Mount St. Mary’s the game before that 76-61. If you notice, both of those margin’s of victory are very near what Kentucky posed against those teams.

After taking on Lamar, Kentucky will only have one game per week for the next six weeks. So this is a great opportunity for them to leave it all on the floor and then take time to rest and heal.

Will the Cats another stride toward who they want to be?

The Kentucky Wildcats will play their second game in three games this evening when the Lamar Cardinals come to town. The game will be on the SEC Network and can be streamed online with WatchESPN.

Given that this is the beginning of Louisville hate week, there may be some extra drive to destroy any Cardinals in town this week, but tonight’s game is more about fixing the issues that have plagued the Wildcats in recent outings.

After shooting abysmally from behind the three-point line for most of the season, the Wildcats shot 40% from deep against Mount St. Mary’s on Friday. The return of Immanuel Quickley certainly helped with that, as he shot 3 for 4 from three.

Pick and roll defense, taking good shots, and cleaning up mental mistakes are the focus areas for the team today according to John Calipari’s postgame press conference on Friday. Kentucky is about to enter a more relaxed part of their schedule, as far as frequency of games.

This is normally when we see the most growth from John Calipari teams. Will we see that growth start tonight?

Power ranking Kentucky’s basketball players after moving their season to 4-1 with a win over Mount Saint Mary’s

On Sunday, Kentucky prevailed over Mount St. Mary's behind a slow first half and a promising second half to a final tally of 82-62, a non-spread-covering margin. The Mountaineers’ Damien Chong Qui (certain member of the 2020 Name Mount Rushmore) attempted his best Isaiah Thomas impersonation for the Mountaineers but just couldn't outdo Junior Nick Richards and the Kentucky Wildcats.

Frankly, Kentucky needed to perform well, and they did en route to a comfortable victory over, once again, a sizably inferior foe. Whatever, I’ll take it. Here are my power rankings of each player following the two-hour shift from 3-1 to 4-1:

1. Injured Ashton Hagans

Hagans hasn’t been at full speed since the Korean War but that hasn’t halted the sophomore point guard from slicing up one of the Northeast Conference’s premier defenses. Chong Qui and the entire Mountaineer flock had no answers for Hagans’ uncharacteristic made layups and passes to his own teammates.

No. 0 in blue followed up Monday night’s 26-point outburst with 16 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds and just 2 turnovers. Still on an unwell wheel, that’s a fantastic night. This time around, his teammates decided to contribute by cutting, setting off-ball screens and making jumpers rather than idly watching Ash dribble into a dozen players and draw fouls or dribble the ball off his foot.

When not required to steer every oar on the canoe, Hagans settled into his ideal role: Table-setting lead guard who can get to the rim and pass to OPEN shooters or rim-running forwards. He looked great again. There’s a faint scent of PJ Washington-ness the way Ashton took over the offense and controlled the team down for most of the second half’s these past two outings. UK needs a leader still. That’s all I’ll say.

2. Nick Richards

“When in doubt, go to number four down low” evoked a Joker-esque laugh from me when John Sundvold staked the claim midway through Friday’s game. But after Richards’ back-to-back 21-10 and 19-6 stat lines this work week, Nick’s making me smile wider than Joker after his interview with Robert De Niro’s Jimmy Kimmel alter-ego.

Again, the dunks. For years and years, all two of them, Nick botched alley-oops habitually. I think he might be the only 7-footer to convert a higher percentage of 18-footers than slam dunks. Tonight, he compromised and just made both, dunking ON people and connecting on another sweet mid-ranger or two.

He continues to move like he’s on stilts when guarding opposing guards (particularly our abbreviated friend Chong Qui) but overall turned in another dominant performance. Learning to trust him is like trusting Kentucky Football during the early Stoops era. Call this his 2016.

3. Immanuel Quickley

For two weeks, Kentucky eschewed three pointers in favor of turnovers and Riley Welch flings (shots similar to Welch’s late-game air-ball floater vs. MSM). IQ returned to the lineup Friday after missing Monday’s bout with an apparent sternum injury and his presence was felt—in the form swished threes, most notably. I felt like Zero and Stanley in Holes when they stumbled upon a freshwater stream. “ZEEEERRO, UK found made three pointers!”

How delightful.

4. Tyrese Maxey

Maxey oozes play-breaking speed and a hounding mentality. But he also looks so frantic and nervous. Just look at his shoulders, they’re perched up like Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men when he quips “why the two orders, captain”—sharing the Fifty Cups of Espresso energy that Maxey has on the basketball court.

Calipari tells his “kids” all the time that they need to calm down and let “things” come to them. Maxey has the talent and raw athleticism not to wait like a role player might but he hasn’t figured out the perfect method of channeling that energy since the Michigan State game. Maybe he’s a PTP’ER to use Vitale vernacular. If he simply just elevates when with the stakes of the game, then I’m excited for December 28th.

5. Kahlil Whitney

Kahlil splashed a three, connected on an early alley-oop and provided sound defense while weaving his way to a final line of 9 points, 2 steals and 1-each rebound and assist.

Shabby? No.

Titillating? For a number of reasons, yes.

Kahlil continues to be an underrated shooter, making a Totally Telling 3/7 on the year from three! Jokes aside, Kahlil converts jumpers regularly although his form reminds me of Ricky Rubio’s crossed with a corkscrew.

He’s just a caterpillar right now in terms of what he can be both in Lexington and in professional ball, and I really see no answer in near sight to the identity of his game. Still, I’m excited to see the niche Calipari finds for Kahlil offensively (he will).

Defensively, he can be a jackknife and he will be with a few (could be 100 more for all I know) more games under his belt.

6. EJ Montgomery

In his welcome back, Montgomery drained a three and missed a couple of boneheaded 20-foot two’s. He also rebounded well and didn’t get abused on defense. If you can’t read my bluntness, this was a fairly mundane big man performance from Efrem Jr. But it was nice to have another lanky forward in there to give Nick and Nate a breather while also spacing the floor just a tad and inhaling a sextuplet of rebounds.

7. Nate Sestina

Nate Sestina has defended quite poorly during Kentucky’s Evansville/Utah Valley/Mount St. Mary’s murderer’s gauntlet over the past couple weeks. I’m hanging on to my Nate Sestina stock with Alex Honnold margins—I’m inches away from nose-diving off my “He’s One of Our Best Players” mountain. He isn’t right now, unless his mythical “verbal leadership” (Cal raves about this) is why IQ made threes or Nick Richards finished dunks.

I will say, he’s actually in a bit of a matchup nightmare against these small-conference foes. Lower-level mid-majors tend to run small, often wheeling out 6-5 or 6-6 gunners as their power forward. Against Nate, they’re just quicker, able to beat the Bucknell product off the bounce and maneuver into open threes with relative ease, capitalizing on his worst weakness.

Once Kentucky plays the Ohio State’s, Louisville’s and the SEC, Sestina should be matched up with traditional forwards, and he’s a strong defender in the post. It sounds strange, I know, but these games are unideal for Sestina’s skillset. If you’ll recall, similar defensive disgruntlement over Reid Travis was shared early last year when his feet seemed like cement chasing smaller, speedier 4-men.

How was Reid in conference play and beyond? (I’ll let you think).

8. Johnny Juzang

I’ll die screaming that Johnny J should play more. He glides like a lotion-soaked rattlesnake on offense, flowing through the half-court sets with direction and intent to create a scoring play, whether it’s drawing his man out to open driving lanes for Ashton or diving towards the offensive glass (these are not common traits among our Cats), Johnny operates with purpose uniformly.

On a team of “kids,” I’d like to see the patient slitherer get a little bit more run. But I get it, UK is LOADED at guard, although I’d forgo playing Brooks as a 3, but that’s just me.

9. Keion Brooks

Sorry if I’m not gushing about a 2-point, 3-rebound performance, it sounds like one of my roommates’ fraternity brothers (a shirtless ragamuffin by the looks of it) just shattered my toilet on his way to spew regurgitated Coors Banquet all over the damn place. Brooks’ mid-range jumper and team-leading 85 minutes spent with his foot on the three-point line (JUST TAKE A THREE) are the only sure things; everything else comes and goes with the consistency of John Travolta’s acting career.

Finally, a win we can all feel mildly good about.
