American Pharoah (yes, spelling Nazis, the spelling of the name is correct) won the Kentucky Derby yesterday in very impressive fashion. He was challenged strongly by Dortmund and Firing Line with the 52-year old Gary Stevens aboard with a recently replaced knee. But American Pharoah was equal to the task, and Stevens was denied a story that would likely dominate the sports media for weeks.

Do we have a possible Triple Crown horse this year? Well, yes, at least for another couple of weeks and maybe even a month. This horse looks fit enough to be the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

I was trying to beat AP, but obviously, that didn’t work out for me. I did think he was the best horse in the race and I did pick him to win, but I usually avoid betting on favorites. I had him in an exacta with Dortmund, but Firing Line spoiled that one for me.

More: John Clay says this Derby will be tough to top. I think he’s right, it was a great race from start to finish.
