Kentucky Wildcats Morning Quickies: September 11th Memorial Edition

Let us remember the 13th anniversary of the September 11th attacks today. Just think for a moment where you were when they happened. I was sitting at work, and my wife called me and told me that a plane had crashed into the World trade center. I then turned on the radio, and the full extent of the horror gradually revealed itself.

Kentucky football

• Mark Stoops is apparently less than pleased with the locker-room material Jojo Kemp provided to Florida. It’s usually not wise to tug on Superman’s cape, and even though Florida was down last season, we all know what kind of players they get.

• Is Patrick Towles ready for the swamp? Ready or not, it’s waiting for him.

• DJ Eliot on the Florida offense:

• Kentucky wants to increase the offensive pace against Florida. They’d better.

• SEC Nation is coming to Lexington for the South Carolina game. That would be a nice one for UK to pull an upset in, don’t you think? Sending Spurrier back to Columbia with butt-hurt would be a lot of fun.

• Damien Harris is planning to visit Alabama and Florida. Can’t blame him. Hope we can get him. Not sure we can.

• Mark Stoops previews the Florida game in his weekly press conference.

  Here’s the thing, it’s been 27 years since Kentucky beat Florida. While I’m normally a let your game speak for you type, when the monkey on your back is that old, maybe having a mental can do attitude is ok.

  If the Gators need motivation in the form of a poster on the wall with a Kentucky running back’s words on it, how mighty are they?

  Fair question. Are the Gators in that much need of motivation?

• Mark Stoops says “We need to get SEC caliber players in here.” I thought that was what we were doing, coach?

• ESPN not unanimous in their opinion of the UK-UF game. Wouldn’t surprise me either way.

• How Kentucky has fared against Florida. I’ll save you a click: Not very well.

Kentucky basketball

• Malik Newman says some of the coaches recruiting him are a little slow on the texting trigger.

  My problem is that I’m often away from my phone, and if I don’t see a text come in, something usually happens to knock the notification off the screen, and I just forget to check. If I know a text is coming, I’m pretty quick to reply for an old guy.

• Calipari is playing the, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” card with recruits again. I love it when he does that.

• Thon Maker’s summer mixtape. We need this guy. He’s a perfect fit. Well, to be fair, he’s a perfect fit for anybody who wants a good team.

• John Robic went down to Jax the other day to visit 2016 Udoka Azubuike.

• The Big Blue Madness campout is one week away. Amazing how time flies.

• UK targets Jaylen Brown and Malik Newman are the top uncommitted players in ESPN’s New rankings.

• Harvey Udike, the Alabama fan who poisoned the trees at Toomer’s Corner, has paid less that $100 of the $800,000 he owes to Auburn. I suspect a garnishment is forthcoming.

College basketball

• Vanderbilt lands a four-star center. It usually doesn’t take Kevin Stallings too long to get the Commodores back in a competitive position.

• Indiana lands a four-star recruit. They’d just better be glad they don’t want to play us.

• Five reasons for optimism this season for Wisconsin. Wisconsin will be tough this season if they stay healthy.

• Oscar Pistorious, the “Blade Runner,” found not guilty of murder, but could be found guilty of the equivalent of manslaughter.

• France upsets favored Spain in the FIBA World Cup.

• The NFL has hired an independent investigator to look into the league office’s handling of the Ray Rice matter. Already the question is being asked, “How independent will rober Mueller be?” From the look of things, not so much.

• Greg Monroe was arrested for DUI and could not control his bladder. I find the fact that the police revealed this troubling. It has nothing at all to do with the crime, and just makes Monroe look like a joke.

  Look, Monroe apparently committed a crime, and that’s okay. It’s not okay to embarrass him further with an irrelevant revelation.

• If you’re famous and wealthy, hire somebody competent to tweet on Twitter. Don’t do what Paul George did.

  Let’s all be sure and line up to condemn George, Danny Ferry, and everybody else who said something impolitic sometime during their lives and now occupy positions in the public eye. We wouldn’t want to miss out on the holier-than-thou bandwagon that is now consuming the American public. I just hope we don’t throw our collective shoulders out of joint patting ourselves on the back for our “righteous” indignation.
