John and Ellen Calipari are taking the Kentucky family approach up a notch, according to this recent story by Larry Vaught over at LEX18.
Vaught recently reported that Derek Willis approached Coach Calipari about training at UK to prepare for next season. Cal apparently asked Willis a few questions, and then extended an invitation for Willis and his fiancee Keely Potts to live with he and Ellen.
“I asked him about working out and he asked me a few things,” said Willis. “Then he really surprised me. He said, ‘You can just stay with us.’ I guess he thought I was also looking for a place to stay and he put that right out there for me. So I got to stay with him and work out and train twice a day. It was great.”
The couple is getting married in Elizabethtown this weekend, and Willis is mulling over his professional basketball options.
Willis just finished a solid year in the NBA G-League, where he averaged around 12 points and 7 rebounds per game, while shooting 47 percent from the field for Grand Rapids.
But Willis wasn’t a fan of the G-League, particularly the pay, and is looking at overseas options.
“The money is a lot better overseas. I should get a lot better contract overseas,” Willis said. “Now, I wish I had done that coming out of UK really. I just want to find a place to go, get a chance to play and show what I can do.”
Vaught reports that Willis had a solid offer to play in Germany, but things didn’t work out with scheduling, so he is keeping his options open.
