Tyrese Maxey draws comparisons to both Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray

It would be great to be compared to either one of those guys.

Tyrese Maxey announced his decision to commit to the University of Kentucky on Wednesday, and while the reclassification rumors have slowed down some, the hype train is not letting up.

ESPN’s Paul Biancardi has been making some bold claims about Maxey’s ability, specifically referencing some of the most beloved players in recent memory.

“He shows the leadership of former Kentucky great and NBA point guard Tyler Ulis and the scoring ability of another great Wildcat and NBA player, Jamal Murray,” Biancardi said in his insider article. “Each can score in a confident and comfortable way from all three levels plus the free throw line.”

Ulis and Murray carried the 2015-2016 team on their backs and became one of the most dangerous back courts in Kentucky basketball history, and that is saying something.

Ulis was as close as you could be to the perfect college point guard. He defended, he scored, and he was a coach on the court.

Murray is second all-time in points scored by a freshman with 720, and he may be first had Kentucky not drawn Indiana in the 2nd round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

While originally listed as a point guard, Maxey is now being ranked as a combo guard by most recruiting outlets and he is best known for his ability to put the ball in the basket.

“Maxey has built a reputation as one of the best scorers in the Class of 2019,” Biancard said. “He can thrive in the open floor or play in the half court with a high level of effectiveness and efficiency. His numbers are strong in nearly every game.”

If Maxey is truly a blend between Ulis and Murray, he will thrive with whoever he gets to share the back court with in 2019-2020.
