Kentucky Wildcats recap Saturday’s promising scrimmage

Saturday’s scrimmage was a perfect opportunity for a lot of information on the Wildcats, including when we’ll know who will be under center come Week 1.

Jason Marcum - Sea of Blue

Kentucky ran another football scrimmage Saturday morning as they prep for the start of their 2018 season.

With Week 1 just two weeks away, many questions are close to being answered. A handful of known commodities such as Benny Snell, Kash Daniel, Lynn Bowden and Mark Stoops took the initiative Saturday afternoon to answer many of those questions.

Bowden

After a thrilling freshman year, Bowden is set to take a major step up in his role on the team. The talent is unquestionable and with a year under his belt, Bowden is poised for a standout sophomore season.

Bowden said he’s taking the approach of talking less and allowing his actions to do the talking, similar to that of senior cornerback Derrick Baity.

Daniel

Daniel said the Cats need to embrace the “next man up” mentality, saying that injuries can’t be used as excuses. With a thin middle of the defense, he talked about younger players stepping in the place of injured veterans such as Jordan Jones.

Daniel also said that he was very impressed with Snell in Saturday’s scrimmage.

Snell

Speaking of Snell, the star running back had his chance to address the media on Saturday regarding Stoops’s comments on Snell becoming a more complete back.

Snell said he dropped what would have been a 40-yard touchdown off a wheel route in Saturday’s scrimmage, but claimed he made up for it with what sounded like a quality day via Daniel.

Snell said he and Daniel are always competing in practice.

Stoops

Stoops made it clear in his interview on Saturday that the Cats are incredibly thin at multiple positions. He also said Snell has been working hard to become an every down and more complete back.

Stoops also answered the major question regarding the starting quarterback position, saying the staff should narrow down the decision hopefully by Monday of Week 1.

As that’s just over a week away, expect the next few practices to ultimately determine the winner with Terry Wilson potentially coming out on top.
