Finally, history has happened for a 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
It happened Friday night in the South Region, where the UMBC Retrievers upset the No. 1 seeded Virginia Cavaliers.
Despite there never being a 16 seed to beat a 1 seed in the Big Dance, UMBC looked like a team that knew history was about to be made.
The first half was about as ugly of a game as you’ll see, as both teams were deadlocked at 21-all through the first 20 minutes.
But when the second half began, it was clear who the better team was, and for once, it was the seed that never won in this scenario since the tournament began in 1939, though the field didn’t expand until 1985.
Still, this will go down as one of the biggest upsets in the history of college sports.
