The recruitment of Shareef O’Neal has been full of twists and turns, but it looks like it may finally be over for good.
On Tuesday, the son of Shaq committed to the UCLA Bruins, just days after backing off his pledge to the Arizona Wildcats. 247 Sports’ Josh Gerson broke the news.
The Kentucky Wildcats were thought to be a suiter for O’Neal, but that didn’t get a chance to happen.
For O’Neal-to-UK to have had any chance of happening, he probably needed to wait until April or even May to make a decision. By then, UK will know who’s staying, going pro or transferring. They’ll also know what E.J. Montgomery is doing since he’s a bigger priority right now.
Alas, he was ready to decide now, and UCLA ended up being the benefactor. you do have to wonder if he knew Calipari wasn’t going to offer him for a decision to come this fast.
Then again, maybe he ultimately wanted to stay on the west coast. Whatever the case may be, that’s one less option for UK in a 2018 class that continues to dwindle as John Calipari runs out of options to add to his three-man class.
