With the Kentucky Wildcats still finishing recruiting for the class of 2024, it is never too early to look ahead to the different classes.
Sam Funches is a 6-foot-10, 210-pound prospect from the class of 2026 who’s currently ranked the No. 1 overall center, according to ESPN. Funches from Mississippi has been making some major headlines with his game, and many schools have been taking notice.
Although Kentucky hasn’t offered Funches, he said some of the staff has been talking to his dad.
“They haven’t been in to see me yet other than at the EYBL circuit,” Funches tells A Sea of Blue. “But my dad has talked to coach Chin [Coleman] and [Orlando] Antigua. [I am] looking forward to really getting to know them.”
If Kentucky does offer Funches eventually, he knows it would be a big opportunity especially with how they have been able to produce great big men in the past.
“Oh wow, that would be huge,” Funches tells us. “A true blessing to be honest. They have produced a lot of elite bigs like Anthony Davis and Karl-Anthony Towns. I do think I have similar skill sets to those guys.”
Funches believes his game matches perfectly to how it is being played today.
“I would describe it as a modern big,” Funches says. “I can step out and shoot, score on the post and midrange.”
When Funches finally decides to commit to a school, he has a certain expectation of what he wants.
“[I am] really looking to see if it’s a family environment where everything is not just centered around basketball,” Funches says. “Being able to have general conversations with the head coach and assistants. And how they plan on using their bigs. How would they use me.”
Funches does hope to hear from Kentucky in the future but at this time for visits, he plans to go to the Alabama versus Mississippi State game in January on a visit.
