John Calipari gives brief update on DJ Wagner

Will Wagner play vs. Penn?

DJ Wagner Dylan Ballard - A Sea Of Blue

The Kentucky Wildcats will look to rebound from their loss to UNC Wilmington this Saturday when they face the Penn Quakers in Philadelphia.

Will DJ Wagner be able to go? The freshman guard missed the loss to the Seahawks after spraining his ankle during the win over Miami.

Initially, the team said it was a lower-extremity injury and that Wagner was day-to-day.

During his Monday radio show, head coach John Calipari gave a brief update on his point guard, who is uncertain to play vs. Penn this week. Calipari added that Wagner’s ankle is no longer swollen but is pretty black and blue.

While Wagner may not be Kentucky’s best guard, it was painfully evident that his presence was missed in what was a brutal performance for the Cats vs. UNC Wilmington, especially on the offensive end. He’s been a solid defender who also runs the offense well while averaging 3.3 assists vs. 1.3 turnovers per game.

Against the Seahawks, Kentucky had just 14 assists compared to 13 turnovers.

Hopefully, Wagner is healthy enough to play this week. Kentucky is definitely going to need him to hang with No. 10 North Carolina the following week in the CBS Sports Classic.
