NCAA Basketball: Illinois State at Kentucky Jordan Prather-USA TODAY Sports

While Antonio Reeves continues to lead the way for his red-hot Kentucky Wildcats, he and Tre Mitchell are about the only two veterans in the rotation.

You could say Adou Thiero and Ugonna Onyenso are “experienced” players, but they both only have one season with limited minutes on their resumes. The rest of Kentucky’s team is made up of young, talented players who made up one of the best recruiting classes head coach John Calipari has ever put together.

The group of Reed Sheppard, Rob Dillingham, DJ Wagner and Aaron Bradshaw have been pretty special for Kentucky. Top-overall recruit Justin Edwards hasn’t really played his best basketball yet, but that should terrify members of the Southeastern Conference.

Once Edwards finds his groove and Jordan Burks can capitalize on the minutes he receives, this team will truly be able to go 10 players deep on any given night.

Former Wildcat and member of the Unforgettable, Sean Woods, decided to give this team a nickname of their own. Woods called this team the “ThunderCats,” saying that they’re a young group of players who don’t show any fear in big moments.

Kentucky is on arguably the best stretch of their season, blowing out the opposition by an average of 16 points per game the last four weeks. They have a win over North Carolina during that span, which is even more impressive considering how Kentucky took control of that game early and held on to seal the win on a neutral site floor.

The Wildcats appear to have one of the better teams of the Calipari era. It’s certainly early (only 12 games in), but the sky could very well be the limit for these ThunderCats.

Oh, and Kentucky is doing something not seen since the 1995-96 season, which was a pretty good year for the program.

What do you think about the nickname Woods has given this group? How impressed are you with the team now that we’re 12 games into the season? Let us know in the comments below!
