Analyst says Duke still in good spot for Edgecombe; Blue Devils score prediction

The Blue Devils may still be the team to beat for this top-five recruit.

The recruitment for one of the top guards in the class of 2024 is really heating up.

VJ Edgecombe, the 6-foot-5 shooting guard out of Long Island Lutheran High School, recently narrowed his recruitment, and it’s a three-way battle between the Baylor Bears, Duke Blue Devils, and Kentucky Wildcats.

Edgecombe was once thought to be a Duke lean, but Kentucky has made up ground, and Baylor has been a team to watch.

While some might have thought the momentum with Duke faded away, On3 recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw recently indicated that Duke is still very much a contender, if not the outright favorite.

Sources say that Duke has carried momentum here, but intel suggests that Kentucky has made up ground. Intel also suggests that Duke and Kentucky are paying attention to Baylor as we approach a possible commitment.

Shaw noted that Kentucky adding Chuck Martin to the staff played a key role in Kentucky making up ground in the recruitment, as Edgecombe and Martin have had a prior relationship.

Coincidentally, a prediction was logged for Duke on the same day this interview was posted. That came via 247 Sports analyst Colby Giacubeno.

Edgecombe is one of the top guards and overall prospects in the class as an athletic scorer who is at his best in transition with a great ability to finish at the rim.

This recruitment brings a lot of interest because of Edgecombe’s talent and the belief that he can immediately come in and be a key contributor, but also because there is buzz among each of the three programs involved.

Some in the recruiting world think Kentucky is the leader, some think Duke, and some think Baylor. It’s not often you see a recruitment where it could go any of three possible directions, so this recruitment will be something to watch.
