Mark Stoops. John Calipari.

Say what you will about their relationship, but there’s no question they’re one of, if not the best football-basketball duo in UK history when it comes to beating the Cards.

That dominance continued in a big way in 2023, as Stoops and Calipari just completed their latest sweep of the Louisville Cardinals.

It actually didn’t appear likely to happen this year with how Kentucky Football’s 2023 season was playing out. The football Cats entered the annual Governor’s Cup having lost five of six games and facing a top-10 Louisville team in contention for the College Football Playoff.

But just as he’s regularly done since 2016, Stoops and his Cats took down the Cards for a season-defining victory, 38-31.

At that point, it was pretty much a given that Kentucky would complete the football-basketball sweep given how bad Louisville is on the hardwood, and that’s exactly how it played out Thursday in the KFC Yum! Center.

While it was technically a road game, it was far from a hostile environment, as not only did the Cats dominate Louisville on the court, but we also saw the Big Blue Nation flex its muscles in the stands, greatly outnumbering Cards fans in their own building.

Thanks to a 30-point effort from Antonio Reeves with double-doubles from Tre Mitchel (18 points & 12 rebounds) and Reed Sheppard (11 points & 11 assists), Kentucky dominated the Cards en route to a 95-76 victory.

With that, Coach Calipari is now 13-3 vs. Louisville since arriving in Lexington, while Coach Stoops has won five straight and six of seven over the Cards.

Good times.
