VJ Edgecombe on recruitment: “I’m leaning one way”

This is viewed as a Kentucky vs. Duke battle heading down the stretch.

The Kentucky Wildcats already have a massive haul when it comes to the 2024 basketball recruiting class. Is another major domino about to fall?

As things currently stand, the highest-ranked 2024 recruit Kentucky is still pursuing is VJ Edgecombe, a consensus top-10 recruit ranked as high as No. 5 overall by ESPN, On3, and Rivals, while 247 Sports has him at No. 6.

Oh, and it’s basically down to Kentucky vs. Duke for his services, so you know this is one John Calipari and his staff badly want to win, especially with how many of these head-to-head battles the Blue Devils have won recently.

Going into the fall signing period, Duke was the perceived favorite, but Kentucky has been slowly picking up steam since the early period ended.

So, where do things stand now?

In an interview with On3’s Joe Tipton, Edgecombe didn’t disclose who is leading in his recruitment or how soon a decision will come. However, Edgecombe did admit he is leaning toward one option.

“I’m leaning one way,” Edgecombe told Tipton.

“I just want to make sure that I have a good relationship with the coaching staff and in a system where I will thrive,” Edgecombe said when asked what he is looking for. “Somewhere where I’m welcomed. I don’t want to go somewhere where I’m not really wanted.”

When asked about Kentucky specifically and his October visit to Lexington, here’s what Edgecombe had to say.

“The visit was great to be honest. Getting to know Coach Cal more, a legendary coach. Getting to know him more was one of the best things of the visit. Seeing the players, how they develop.”

As for making a decision, he added, “I’ll do it when I’m comfortable with things, the decision I’m about to make. I don’t know when.”
