DJ Wagner earns SEC Freshman of the Week honors

Wagner played a big role in helping Kentucky beat No. 9 North Carolina.

Kentucky Wildcats freshman guard DJ Wagner has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, it was announced Monday. Wagner earns the award for a second time this season following his performance in the Wildcats’ win over the No. 9 North Carolina Tar Heels in the CBS Sports Classic.

In the game, the 6-foot-4, 192-pound Wagner recorded 14 points on 6/14 shooting, six rebounds (tied for the team-high), and five assists (team-high) as Kentucky came away with an 87-83 victory. He also played a team-high 35 minutes.

For the season, Wagner is averaging 12.8 points, 3.9 assists, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game.

Kentucky has won more weekly SEC honors (128) than any other school during the John Calipari era, including 97 SEC Freshman of the Week honors and 31 SEC Player of the Week nods. Wagner has earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors twice this season, while Reed Sheppard earned it once.
