What a win it was yesterday for the Kentucky Wildcats. North Carolina is a very good team that’s well coached and has several experienced players. Yesterday’s game in the CBS Sports Classic was a great spot for them to remind Kentucky of who has played in those games before, but the younger Wildcats were prepared and ready for the moment.
There were many things to be excited about in Kentucky’s 87-83 win, but the coaching of John Calipari has to be near the top. He’s been much more calm, cool and collected on the bench this year. He hasn’t immediately pulled his young players for a mistake here or there. Calipari is coaching his guys while also letting them run and learn how to play together.
You also have to be thrilled both Aaron Bradshaw and now Ugonna Onyenso were able to return in time for last night’s game. In games against teams with elite guards who like to attack the paint (RJ Davis) and big men who like to dominate the glass (Armando Bacot), Kentucky’s big men are going to provide a huge lift by being able to anchor defensively.
We’ve all seen Kentucky’s guards, how special they are and how deep the rotation goes. But to play poised and under control in such a high pressure game was wonderful to watch. Kentucky has a great mix of freakishly athletic guards who can finish at the rim combined with good long-distance shooters to keep opposing defenses from crowding the paint.
After the loss a couple of weeks ago to UNC-Wilmington, there was a slight concern that Kentucky wasn’t as good as they’d been made out to be following their win over Miami. But after taking down UNC, this win proves Kentucky can hang with anyone in the country.

Clutch points from SGA last night.
Everyone played pretty well.
Another great game from yesterday.
This has to be one of his better coaching jobs.
Looks like he’ll actually suit up.
UK’s bowl game won’t be an easy one.
The definition of a heater.
So much young talent on this team.
No place for this in football.
