Did anyone else believe the Kenny Payne era with Louisville was going to cause problems for Kentucky? I’ve been wrong on a few predictions, but this one appears to be vastly incorrect with the future of Louisville’s head coach already in question.
According to Jeff Goodman, Louisville Athletic Director Josh Heird met with Payne’s players to get their thoughts on their head coach and the current state of the basketball program.
Louisville AD Josh Heird met with multiple Louisville players today to get their thoughts on Kenny Payne and entire situation with the program before making decision, sources told @TheMessenger.— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanHoops) December 15, 2023
Source said Heird leaning towards making a move with Payne “fairly soon.”
Goodman said this meeting was held before making a decision, which only really implies one of two things. Louisville will either decide to ride out the year with Payne, or he’ll be relieved of his head coaching duties just over one year into his six-year contract.
Last season, Payne’s Cardinals went 4-28 after starting the year 0-9. They also had a 10-game losing streak in the middle of year. Historically, Louisville is considered one of the better men’s basketball programs across the country — so this was clearly unacceptable.
This season, the Cardinals have already matched their win total from last season with four but have also already suffered six losses — including a current losing streak of three straight with their most recent losses to Virginia Tech, DePaul and Arkansas State.
Sports can sometimes be a rollercoaster, but it’s been that and much worse for Payne.
