The Kentucky Wildcats’ staff have been traveling all over the country in recent weeks on the recruiting trail looking to build the next great classes.
However, one of the scheduled visits kept Chin Coleman close to home.
Ben Roberts of the Herald-Leader reported that Coleman was in Louisville on Tuesday to check out Cyr Malonga from Evangel Christian.
Malonga is a 6-foot-11 center from the Republic of Congo who’s been playing basketball for just three years.
However, he has already made a name for himself and has caught the interest of the Kentucky staff.
During his sophomore campaign, Malonga averaged 11.5 points and 11.8 rebounds and is expected to continue his rise as a junior. He is being coached by Larry Miller who recently took the Evangel Christian job, and Miller sees a bright future for the emerging star.
“He runs well for his size,” Miller said. “He’s got a really good skill level for a 6-11 kid. He can handle the ball. He can shoot from the perimeter. And he’s been playing a short period of time, so his upside is really, really high.”
Miller went on to add that he sees Malonga as more of a “trail 4” player at the college level.
Kentucky’s Orlando Antigua watched Malonga back in July on the Nike circuit, so a follow-up by Coleman suggests that the Kentucky coaches are quite interested.
As of right now, Malonga is not ranked by any of the major outlets, but that may not be the case much longer.
