Where UK stands in CBS’ college football preseason rankings

A good spot for a UK team that has a lot of potential but also some big questions needing answers.

The college football preseason rankings are coming in fast and furious as August is here.

CBS Sports released their rankings, and they have the Kentucky Wildcats ranked as the 35th-best team in the country, which seems fair. The Cats have a great deal of returning talent, and they did as well as any team in college football did with the transfer portal.

But there are questions regarding the quarterback position as Will Levis and Joey Gatewood figure to battle it out but neither guy has ever separated themselves at that position. There have been coaching changes and some turmoil as well. Here is what Chip Patterson had to say:

With three new head coaches in the SEC East, it’s Mark Stoops — now in his ninth year leading the Wildcats — who has become the most-tenured coach at his current position in the division. Five straight bowl appearances and three straight bowl wins have create a fine reputation that can help keep a high floor on these rankings, and I think that’s what we see here with a mid-30s starting point for UK.

I don’t think there is anyone out there that can argue these points. Kentucky could be a top 25 team as the season progresses if Levis or Gatewood can give them a real throwing threat.

As far as the Cats’ schedule is concerned, they will face off against #5 Georgia, #12 Florida, #14 LSU, #47 Missouri, #55 Mississippi State, and #65 Louisville, among others.

Kentucky may be on the precipice of another strong season after a rough SEC only schedule. This year’s slate is very favorable and the buzz around the team is growing more positive as camp approaches.
