John Calipari has been on a mission since the disappointment that was the 2020-21 season.
Calipari and his new staff are looking to get the Kentucky Wildcats back to where the program was during the first half of the Calipari era.
Getting the program back to those heights is going to start on the recruiting side of things and bringing in the best talent in the country.
Since Orlando Antigua and Chin Coleman joined the staff, the Cats have been back in contention, and in some cases, viewed as the favorite for some of the top players in future classes.
This week is rankings week for Rivals, as they are updating their class of 2022 and 2023 rankings following the summer AAU events.
On Tuesday, Rivals’ Rob Cassidy revealed the new top five for the 2022 class, and the Cats are in contention for two of the nation's top five players.
Coming in as the new No. 1 overall player was shooting guard Shaedon Sharpe. He’s also the top-ranked prospect at new recruiting service On3.
During this summer’s Peach Jam, Sharpe was one of if not the most consistent players there averaging 21.6 points on 44.4% shooting from three the first week, and 24 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3 assists on 47.5% shooting from the field the second week of the event.
The other Kentucky target making the top five was center Dereck Lively, who came in at No. 3 overall.
Lively was also impressive at Peach Jam averaging 8.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks while shooting 60% from the floor and helping lead Team Final to a Peach Jam championship. In the title game, he poured in 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks as they defeated Brad Beal Elite 64-61.
The Cats are viewed as the favorite in this recruitment as well, although it is not as definitive since just one FutureCast and one Crystal Ball prediction have been made but the Cats received both of them.
Here is the entire updated top five according to Rivals.
