Happy Saturday, BBN. I’m back from vacation and ready to get the football season underway. We are about a month away from the first snap but it seems much further than that.
There has been plenty to discuss concerning college football lately as Texas and Oklahoma are officially on their way to the SEC in 2025. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey made a major power move to get the two biggest marquee names out of the Big 12 but he may not be finished raiding conferences.
Outgoing Florida President John Thrasher was interviewed by the Tallahassee Democrat and his comments about his current conference, the ACC, were less than committal. “My point to (FSU director of athletics) David Coburn and to (new ACC commissioner) Jim Phillips is I don’t want Florida State to be left behind. I consider us as part of the ACC, but I also know that we have a marquee name, Clemson has a marquee name. I think there might be people coming after us, I don’t know, but we’ve got to be prepared no matter what the options are.”
I think the “I consider us part of the ACC” portion was quite interesting. Would the SEC make another power move and raid the ACC taking away Florida State, Clemson, and maybe Miami? I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens eventually. It would probably be in the best interest of the ACC and the Big 10 to start moving on expanding or the SEC is going to gobble up whatever they want.
It puts a team like our friends down the road in a deja vu type scenario. When Louisville finally broke into the Big East it didn’t take long for the Big 12 and the ACC to start taking teams away. Louisville eventually made it to the ACC but they had to spend a few years in limbo and their football and basketball programs are not nearly as attractive as they were back then.
It’s going to be a wild ride.
