It seems like preseason injuries have become a common occurrence for the Kentucky Wildcats in recent years, and unfortunately, it continues again this preseason.
On Tuesday, Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio reported that tight end Keaton Upshaw has suffered an injury during preseason training and is out indefinitely.
Mark Stoops is expected to share more details on the injury and Upshaw’s timetable to return this afternoon at SEC Media Days.
With new offensive coordinator Liam Coen, many expected Upshaw would be due for a big season in 2021 since he is bringing an offensive style that uses multiple tight ends and gets them a lot of targets.
In 2020, Upshaw led Kentucky in receiving touchdowns with three, and he was 2nd in both receptions (16) and receiving yards (193) behind Josh Ali.
Unfortunately, this isn’t Upshaw’s first injury since being at Kentucky. He was expected to get a lot of snaps during his freshman season in 2018, but a season-ending knee injury kept him off the field.
If Upshaw has to miss time this fall, the Cats will turn to Justin Rigg to step up as the lead tight end. Behind him will be Brenden Bates and freshman Jordan Dingle.
Upshaw joins wide receiver Clevan Thomas and linebacker D’Eryk Jackson on the preseason injury list.
