It would appear Illinois big man Kofi Cockburn is ready to make a decision regarding his collegiate future.
Today, Cockburn revealed on Twitter that an announcement is coming Friday, which is almost certainly related to what school he’ll be attending next season.

In addition to entering his name into the NBA Draft, Cockburn officially entered the transfer portal back on July 1st. There was wild speculation about his destination immediately upon the announcement with Kentucky being a strong suitor, if not the favorite for his services.
Cockburn eventually pulled out of the draft and now looks set to either remain at Illinois or come to Kentucky next season.
This past season at Illinois, Cockburn put up 17.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The 7-foot Jamaica native had an outstanding campaign that led to All-American honors, but not good enough to put him in the conversation as a high NBA Draft pick. So his decision to return to college or head to the NBA likely came down to the new NIL, which will allow him to stay in school and still make a nice chunk of money, especially if he’s in Lexington next season.
Saying all of this, Kentucky’s roster will be very deep with or without Cockburn. He certainly would make the team better, but the Wildcats still have a stable of talented big men that can get the job done.
