Kentucky the favorite for coveted transfer Jacquez Jones, per report

This would be a massive addition for arguably the thinnest position on a promising Kentucky roster.

The Kentucky Wildcats are emerging as the favorites for Ole Miss Rebels transfer Jacquez Jones, according to reporter Matt Zenitz.

In addition, Jones is planning to make a decision as soon as this coming week, so this recruitment could end almost as quickly as it began.

The big thing going in Kentucky’s favor is current assistant coach Jon Sumrall, who briefly coached Jones when the two were in Oxford in 2018. That connection is likely a big reason why Kentucky is now the alleged favorite in this recruitment, which has seen schools like West Virginia, UCLA and South Carolina jump in the mix.

A two-year starter for the Rebels, Jones was the team’s leading tackler last season with 75 tackles to go with 2.5 tackles for loss in just nine games. In 2019, he racked up 71 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one pass deflection in 11 games.

Originally from Tuscaloosa (AL), Jones was a three-star Class of 2018 prospect via 247 Sports Composite. Among the schools to offer him a scholarship included the Michigan Wolverines, LSU Tigers, Tennessee Volunteers, and Maryland Terrapins among others.

If Jones were to pick Kentucky, this linebacker group quickly goes from a major question mark to a rather solid group that would include a potential all-conference performer in DeAndre Square, a third-year breakout candidate in Jared Casey, and one of the best defensive recruits Kentucky has ever landed in Trevin Wallace.

In the meantime, check out some highlights of Jones in action.
