Chet Holmgren is projected as the No. 1 draft pick in the 2022 draft. He is the top player in the 2021 class, and he will play his college basketball at Gonzaga.
However, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony believes that Kentucky commit Daimion Collins is in the same conversation as Holmgren.
“(Collins is) an absolute freak physically, and some of the things he does on the perimeter — I don’t think the gap between him and Chet Holmgren is that big, honestly,” Givony told KSR this weekend. “They have a lot of similarities.”
Kentucky has a big man transfer in Oscar Tshiebwe next season, so where does Collins fit? Due to his athletic prowess and his ability to shoot, Collins may be the perfect compliment, according to Givony.
“I think the fact that Daimion can shoot is going to help him a lot and he can pass too,” Givony said. “He’s a pretty versatile big man.”
The Kentucky program has had several versatile big men over the years: Willie Cauley-Stein, Bam Adebayo, Karl-Anthony Towns, and of course Anthony Davis. It is tough to put pressure on a recruit by making comparisons to these great players, but Collins certainly seems to fit the mold of these guys coming out of high school.
If next year’s front court players are who they appear to be, Kentucky should have one of the stronger front courts in the country. And depending on where the last few pieces fall in recruiting, that may be the case across the board.
