Former Kentucky Wildcats point guard Devin Askew has found his next college destination.
Just one week after announcing he would enter the transfer portal, Askew has committed to the Texas Longhorns, according to 247 Sports’ Travis Branham.
“After exploring the different universities, I’m excited to attend the University of Texas,” Askew announced. “Thank you to coach [Chris] Beard and the coaching staff! I can’t wait to get started!”
Askew, a former five-star recruit out of California, came to Kentucky in the Class of 2020 with a lot of hype as a potential multi-year star in Lexington. However, his first season was anything but, as he struggled mightily to adjust to the college game, especially on the offensive end.
When the offseason began, it seemed like Askew coming back for Year 2 was likely, especially after his father said his son was returning. But given his immense struggles while Kentucky likely brings in several impact guards, it’s not that shocking in reality.
As of now, Kentucky’s backcourt consists of Kellan Grady, Dontaie Allen, Nolan Hickman, and technically Jacob Toppin since he did start at shooting guard late in the season. Davion Mintz is still deciding on whether he’ll play a sixth season of college hoops or go pro.
Also, Kentucky extended a scholarship offer today to point guard TyTy Washington. If he commits, Washington could essentially be taking Askew’s spot on the roster, though I would still expect Kentucky to pursue one more transfer guard.
Best of luck to Askew as he begins the next chapter of his hoops journey!
