Oddsmakers give John Calipari third-best odds to become next Texas head coach

It feels like there’s no chance of this happening, but oddsmakers think there’s some chance Calipari could still be in contention.

While it appears highly unlikely John Calipari is going anywhere this offseason, Vegas still believes there’s a chance he becomes the Texas Longhorns’ next head coach.

Adam Zagoria put out this morning a list of the current odds for the opening at Texas. Wildly enough, they give the Kentucky head coach the third-best overall odds to land in Austin next season at 11/2.

Calipari is obviously behind the heavy favorite in Chris Beard (1/1), who has reportedly been Texas’ top target all along, but the list is also highlighted by some other big names throughout the sport.

Once again, I don’t think anyone is anticipating that Coach Cal would even entertain an offer if Texas threw one his way. Especially with the news of him being one of the main contact points in the recruitment of Davidson transfer Kellan Grady. It seems more likely he is as locked in as he ever has been since he arrived in Lexington in 2010.

Still, it is worth noting that if Beard turns down the job, Texas does have the booster support to throw a huge chunk of change to see if they can lure him to Austin.

Saying this, if things with Beard fall through, it looks like Brooklyn Nets assistant and Texas alum Royal Ivey is the backup plan.

Even though it’s a crazy thought, you can obviously see why they could potentially be interested. If UCLA could make Calipari an offer he considered, why couldn’t Texas?

Either way, until guys like Beard, Ivey or Kelvin Sampson turn down the job, this is nothing more than betting odds.
