We now know who the mystery team is John Calipari hinted that Kentucky could play this week had they beaten Florida over the weekend.
With a win over the Gators, Kentucky could have been close enough to the NCAA Tournament bubble that a big win over a non-conference team could propel them into the conversation for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
However, that scenario required Kentucky winning out, which they failed to do by losing 71-67 to the Gators at home. That loss pretty much killed any hope of Calipari finding a non-conference foe to add to the schedule this week.
As it turns out, No. 1 Gonzaga was the team in question, Calipari revealed Wednesday during his call-in show.
“The game that I tried to get and we almost got done was Gonzaga,” Calipari revealed, adding that his players were “ecstatic” at the thought of playing the No. 1 team in America.
While a strong finish that included a win over Gonzaga could have theoretically put Kentucky on the bubble, the unbeaten Zags are ranked No. 1 for a reason. Even had the game been in Rupp, it’s hard to see Kentucky at any point this season being good enough to take down the Zags.
Kentucky probably got lucky this game didn’t get scheduled, especially after what we just saw take place in Oxford.
