Hunter Sallis to Gonzaga

The top-10 recruit makes his college choice.

Five-star guard Hunter Sallis has made his college commitment.

On Friday, Sallis officially committed to the Gonzaga Bulldogs. He becomes the program’s highest-ranked recruit ever.

A 6-5, 175-pound guard who plays at Millard North High School in Omaha (NE), Sallis is ranked seventh overall in 2021 by Rivals. In addition to Gonzaga, he also held offers from the Kentucky Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks, North Carolina Tar Heels, UCLA Bruins and Oregon Ducks.

The Wildcats already have a commitment from 2021 point guard Nolan Hickman, but they still pursued Sallis, who could help form a heck of a backcourt in 2021-22. Hickman is viewed as more of a multi-year player, while Sallis is a strong one-and-done candidate.

Kentucky was viewed as the favorite once Sallis secured a scholarship offer from John Calipari in August. However, Gonzaga had gotten all of the buzz since then, picking up every Rivals FutureCast and 247 Crystal Ball prediction since December.

Due to the coronavirus, Sallis has been unable to take official visits to schools, and he previously said he wanted to visit Kentucky, but that never happened. He did manage to visit Gonzaga.

For now, Kentucky’s backcourt next season consists of Hickman, sophomore Devin Askew, and redshirt sophomore Dontaie Allen. They’re still waiting on a final decision from Davion Mintz on if he’ll play a sixth season of college hoops or go pro.
