The Bracket Bouncer: Who Can Still Get an NCAA At-Large

Conference tournaments are underway, and have officially ended the NCAA hopes of several teams already

Good afternoon, BBN!

I goofed last week with Oregon. I was looking up what their record was, and for some reason thought it was 9-4 and tossed them. Welp, they’re way better than that (17-5) and nowhere near elimination territory. So, due to a “system error”, they were wrongly eliminated and thus I’ve put them back in this week. No more teams “coming back from the grave” though. Once you’re out, yer out.

Though, annoyingly enough, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Duke, and Michigan State are trying to break the machine and get in anyway. Oh well. I can’t be perfect.

Like the last couple of weeks we are going to look at which teams are NOT eliminated yet, since there are far more eliminated than uneliminated for an at-large berth at this point. For each conference that has an uneliminated team, listed are all the teams that are STILL ALIVE in their quest for one of the precious 36 at-large berths.

Let’s get to it.

AAC: Houston, Wichita State, SMU

ACC: Virginia, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina

A-10: VCU, Saint Louis

Big 12: Baylor, West Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Kansas

Big East: Villanova, Creighton, Xavier, UConn

Big Ten: Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa, Rutgers, Indiana

Missouri Valley: Drake, Loyola Chicago

Mountain West: Utah State, Boise State, San Diego State

Pac-12: UCLA, Oregon, USC, Colorado

SEC: Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, LSU, and Florida

West Coast: Gonzaga, BYU

Teams Eliminated Since Last Week: 3

Richmond is gone. The Spiders, a few months after winning in Rupp, have had their bubble pop. They’re going to need an A-10 tourney miracle now. Minnesota’s also gone at 13-12.

Also, Belmont is unfortunately out. A third loss is one too many for the Bruins, who fell to Morehead State in overtime last week.

On the bright side, Belmont should be heavily favored to win the OVC Tournament—unless Eastern Kentucky steals the show.

Everyone else is still alive and getting ready for conference tournaments. Drake, Saint Louis, UConn, Utah State, and Indiana are playing with fire and need to be very careful in their next couple games. You might not see all of them in this column next week.

Teams Remaining: 45

That’s all for this week! Only 12 more days until Selection Sunday! I’m so excited for the bracket reveal. Next week or so we’ll eliminate some more teams. Until then, go ‘Cats!
