The future for the Kentucky Wildcats is slowly being revealed as we begin to hear which of the 2020-21 players are returning and which are leaving.
So far, we know that forward Cam’Ron Fletcher is transferring, center Olivier Sarr is likely pursing a professional career, guard Devin Askew is returning, and guard Dontaie Allen is returning as well.
There were rumors that forward Lance Ware was going to be transferring, but he quickly shot down those rumors, making it seem like he would be back for a sophomore season.
As the offseason progresses, one of the biggest decisions for the 2021-22 team lies on the shoulders of senior combo guard Davion Mintz.
Rumors about Mintz taking advantage of the extra season of eligibility from the NCAA began before the season ended, and he’s admitted it’s possible he returns for a sixth season.
Since the end of the season, there have been people on both sides of the aisle when it comes to whether or not Mintz will be back next season.
If Mintz returns, he would be a massive help for the team, as he averaged 11.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and a steal. Mintz also led the team in three-point shooting as he shot 37.8% from deep while being a solid point guard once John Calipari moved him there down the stretch.
On top of stats, Mintz would bring a leadership to the team that would be a massive help since he has already been in John Calipari’s system for one season and could help the new guys along.
Not to mention Mintz has proven himself as a guy who will step up and hit the big shot with the game on the line.
Game winner by Davion Mintz. They had this the play earlier but couldn’t execute & Auburn tied it. Ballscreen occupies the top & the backside is overloaded. Mintz steps into the slot. Ball is reversed & now it’s two on one. HORSE shot. @KentuckyRivals pic.twitter.com/gJQDufJOWp

Play of the game. Decoy slip by Jackson to get Devin Askew in space. This occupies the help side eye balls. Vandy’s helps in paint which leaves 2 on 1 on back side. Toppin screens in Davion Mintz who cuts from wing to corner for the game winning three. @KentuckyRivals pic.twitter.com/TNxXIZJQJV

For a team that is currently light on guards, especially in the experience department, Mintz may very well be the key to Kentucky’s 2020-21 season. The most recent buzz has been positive for the Wildcats, but it’s obviously not a done deal either way with his decision looming.
The question is, will he be back? Let us know in the poll below, then expand on that in the comments section for some playful banter!
