The DePaul Blue Demons just finished one of their worst seasons in school history at 5-14 overall and placing 11th in the Big East.
As a result, they just fired their head coach of six seasons in Dave Leitao. Now, it’s reported by The DePaulia that former Kentucky assistant Kenny Payne will be their main target.
Payne was treasured here in Kentucky. Not only did he contribute heavily to recruiting some of the best players this school has ever seen, but he played a huge role in the culture and development of these players and this program.
Now, Payne is an assistant on the New York Knicks who are currently 20-21, sitting at the 8th spot in the East, a position many Knicks fans have only dreamed of being in over the last few years.
So, it’s no surprise that Payne is finally getting some head coaching love, and frankly, it’s overdue.
Another important note is the fact that DePaul’s current AD is DeWayne Peevy, the former deputy athletics director at UK. He and Payne worked together for 10 years at Kentucky, so it would be awesome to see them team up this way at DePaul.
Other potential candidates for the job include Loyola Chicago’s head coach Porter Moser and Cleveland State’s head coach Dennis Gates.
Hopefully this works out for Payne and Peavy, we love to see former Cats succeed!
