I think I speak for most of the Big Blue Nation when I say that the surprise factor was low when freshman small-forward Cam’Ron Fletcher announced his intentions to transfer from the program on Saturday afternoon.
After a bizarre season that resulted in the former four-star recruit from St. Louis completely falling out of the rotation — even the most optimistic of fans had trouble seeing long-term vision.
The most surprising tidbit in the Fletcher saga just may be the fact that he chose to return to Lexington at all after being sent home early in the season.
Monday night during his call-in show, John Calipari addressed the transfer by saying that he had a great talk with Fletcher and understood why he made the decision. Calipari also referenced speaking to his high school coach and that’d he’d always be there for him.
At minimum — a potentially troublesome situation ended amicable, which was ideal for both parties.
Now, Fletcher is free to pursue a new landing spot and Calipari can navigate the recruiting trail without the black-eye of an unexpected mid-season freshman departure.
Recently, Fletcher talked with 247 Sports and listed the schools that have already contacted him.
“I heard from Florida State, USC, UCLA, Washington, St. Mary’s, San Diego State, Oklahoma State, Marquette, Georgetown, Memphis, Tennessee and Loyola Chicago,” said Fletcher.
Many are still linking his name with the Saint Louis Billikens. We will see if that idea gains any steam.
Although he’s no longer part of the program, I’m sure Wildcat fans will keep an eye on where Fletcher plays next, especially if he ends up on a future opponent like Tennessee.
If nothing else, this team stuck together and finished this abysmal season out, a feat that had to be extremely difficult, especially for Fletcher, who found himself buried on the bench of a 9-16 team.
