The Kentucky Wildcats are losing another defender to the transfer portal.
After losing cornerback Jamari Brown to the portal on Saturday, defensive tackle Jerquavion Mahone is also reportedly set to transfer, per Matt Zenitz of al.com.
A Class of 2018 signee, Mahone had rarely seen the field coming into the 2020 season. However, he ended up playing in five games while making three tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss this past season. The Georgia native by way of Manchester High School originally committed to Kentucky while also holding a scholarship offer from Tennessee.
The 6-3, 295-pound redshirt sophomore was in line for a bigger role next season after Phil Hoskins and Quinton Bohanna departing. However, Kentucky has several promising youngsters at this position, including Octavious Oxendine, Justin Rogers, Tre’vonn Rybka and Josiah Hayes.
Kentucky is also returning likely starter Marquan McCall, so you can’t blame Mahone for wanting to go somewhere else with a more clear path to significant playing time.
