For the first time in the association’s history, the United States Basketball Writers Association has handed out a team of the week honor.
Their first one? None other than the Kentucky Wildcats women’s basketball team.
After starting last week with a 75-64 win Thursday over No. 10 Arkansas, the Wildcats scored an overtime win Sunday at No. 12 Mississippi State, 92-86. It was the first time since December 2013 that UK has defeated consecutive top-15 ranked opponents and the first time ever that UK has accomplished the feat against SEC foes.
This is the latest of several honors Kentucky earned this week. On Monday, Kyra Elzy was named the espnW National Coach of the Week, while Rhyne Howard was the espnW and College Sports Madness National Player of the Week. Howard also grabbed the Naismith Trophy National Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week honors.
Up next, the Wildcats hit the road again for a major road test at No. 7 Texas A&M on Thursday. Game time is set for 8:30 pm EST on the SEC Network.
