Rhyne Howard was masterful in what was easily the biggest win of the Kyra Elzy era thus far.

What a weekend it’s been for Kentucky Wildcats athletics.

After Saturday’s big day that saw the football Cats win the Gator Bowl and the men’s basketball team win a double-overtime game at Mississippi State, the women’s basketball team pulled off a monster OT win of their own today in Starkville, beating No. 12 Mississippi State 92-86.

Junior guard Rhyne Howard reminded everyone why she’s one of, if not the best player in women’s college basketball and one of the favorites for National Player of the Year honors. Howard erupted for 33 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, including 10 points in overtime as she alone outscored the Bulldogs in the final frame.

This is now the third win UK has notched against top-25 teams this season, two of which came this week following Thursday’s home win over No. 10 Arkansas. But beating a top-15 team on the road is easily the biggest win of the Kyra Elzy era, especially since Mississippi State has been one of the top programs in women’s basketball recently, including two national championship game appearances (2017-18). Beating them in their own building is a massive win for the Cats, and it should propel them into the top 10 of next week’s polls.

What a great way to kick off the new year!
