Kentucky Wildcats tight end Nik Ognenovic is entering the transfer portal, according to Al.com reporter Matt Zenitz. A UK spokesman confirmed the news with the Herald-Leader.
Ognenovic, who was a redshirt freshman this past season, came to UK as a three-star recruit in the Class of 2019 from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Florida, where he was teammates with current UK quarterback Nik Scalzo. Ognenovic finishes his UK career with one catch for eight yards during the 2019 season.
The 6-5, 249-pound pass-catcher held offers from Ole Miss, Louisville, Kansas State, Purdue, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Boston College among others. He was ranked 32nd among tight ends in 2019 by 247 Sports.
This is likely a situation where Ognenovic felt this position was too crowded for him to make an impact anytime soon, so he’s opting to find another school with a more clear path to playing time. Kentucky is already set at tight end for 2021 with Keaton Upshaw and Justin Rigg both returning.
Kentucky is also bringing in three-star tight end Jordan Dingle, who the staff is high on moving forward. Redshirt sophomore Brenden Bates is also someone the staff believes can eventually become an impact player.
Ognenovic was recruited by Eddie Gran, who departed this offseason, so perhaps that factored into the decision to transfer as well.
Best of luck to Ognenovic where he lands next!
