Saturday Quickies: Double Header Edition

BBN has plenty to keep them busy today.

Good morning to everyone in BBN. Both the Kentucky Wildcats football and basketball teams are in action which makes a very busy day for all of us in the fan base.

First up, the Football Cats will take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the Taxslayer Gator Bowl at noon. This is Kentucky’s fifth straight bowl appearance and the team is going for it’s third straight win.

Later in the evening, the basketball team will open conference play by traveling to Starkville to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. They’re also searching for their first win since November.

The last time the Cats were in action on the court was earlier this week when they took on Transylvania in a secret scrimmage. I actually had a chance to see Transy in person last night as they took on the Bellarmine Knights. I left the game with about three minutes left in the second half and Bellarmine was up 85-40 so I’m not sure how much of a challenge Transy did or didn’t pose to the Cats.

I’d love for both teams to win and the fans enjoy a 2-0 Saturday but I’m leaning towards 1-1. I think the football team pulls it off but until John Calipari actually wins a game, it’s hard to pick them to do so.

Quickies

Kentucky knocks off #10 Arkansas in SEC opener | Cats Pause- The women’s team continues to play winning basketball and all of this with a brand news head coach. Keep it rolling, ladies!

Gator Bowl primer | UK Athletics- This is Kentucky’s second visit to the Gator Bowl in three seasons. Their first game there was a loss to Northwestern.

Cedrick Dort not playing in Gator Bowl | WYMT- This news dropped last night and came out of nowhere. Dort is one of the best players on defense so his absence will surely be felt. The reasons behind this aren’t entirely clear.

How does NC State counter Kentucky’s defense? | Backing the Pack- The Wolfpack wants to “throw a wrench” in Kentucky’s defense in order to keep them off balance.

Calipari great at getting players to the NBA, but why doesn’t he win more with them at UK? | Yahoo!- Honestly this is a question that fans have struggled with recently. While we are all happy at their success at the next level, the Final Four from 2015 keeps getting further away.

Kentucky players delete social media | Cats Pause- This is the ugly part of playing for Big Blue Nation.

No regrets for Dabo Swinney ranking Ohio State #11 | ESPN- Swinney defended then doubled down on his decision to rank Ohio State eleventh in his poll. Honestly his reasoning isn’t bad as the Buckeyes only played in five games. But he sure looked like a dummy last night.

College football Saturday Bowl picks | CBS- The number is UK -2.5 but nobody over at CBS likes the Cats to win or even cover the number.

Nobody was beating Alabama on Friday | SI.com- A lot is being made about Notre Dame getting thumped again... and I get it. The Irish have lost ten straight bowl games and all of the losses are blowouts. But let’s be real here... no team in America was beating the Tide yesterday and it’s going to be a tall order for OSU.

I’ll be pulling double duty by hosting both post game shows for football and basketball over on ESPN 680/105.7. Join me immediately following the games for your first chance to react on air and to hear Stoops and Calipari with player sound as well.
