Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops is confident that former top 50 national prospect and Auburn Tigers QB Joey Gatewood will receive an eligibility waiver to play for UK in 2020.

Stoops sat down with Tom Leach for the first 2020 addition of the “Mark Stoops” show and said while there has yet to be a ruling that he feels confident Gatewood will be cleared and that the ruling will be made soon.

“We’ll know more about Joey soon,” he said.

Stoops also noted that he did not want to further detail on the developments surrounding the quarterback, making it sound as if the NCAA may already have a verdict.

Gatewood was ranked as the 49th overall prospect in 2018 and the top-ranked athlete when he committed to Auburn.

After losing the starting quarterback job to Bo Nix, Gatewood decided to leave the plains and transfer to Kentucky.

Even if he is eligible to play this season, he will likely be UK’s backup quarterback behind rising senior Terry Wilson.
