After transferring to Kentucky in early December, Joey Gatewood has finally been ruled eligible by the NCAA and SEC for immediate eligibility this season.
Coincidentally, this comes just after the Auburn game. We all agree that there was a gentleman’s agreement, right?
Gatewood will almost certainly be locked into the No. 2 QB spot next week after the Ole Miss game, but after that, who knows what the plans are or what Stoops has in place for him.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the news:
We’re excited that @joey1gatewood has received waivers from the @NCAA and @SEC and will be eligible to play this season. We’re thankful that the SEC Presidents and Commissioner @GregSankey took into account the unique circumstances around this season.— Mark Stoops (@UKCoachStoops) September 30, 2020

Have my doubts that UK uses Gatewood much this season, but there should certainly be a wildcat package. Could give the offense a nice spark in the red zone.— Adam Luckett (@AdamLuckettKSR) September 30, 2020
Joey Gatewood is also like a freshman for UK. Free year.— Justin Rowland (@RowlandRIVALS) September 30, 2020
The SEC says it has approved “a number” of transfer waiver requests. Statement from commissioner Greg Sankey. pic.twitter.com/h5FAka60sS— David Ubben (@davidubben) September 30, 2020
The SEC has decided to overturn a rule about inter-conference transfers making Joey Gatewood (Kentucky) + Cade Mays (Tennessee) eligible. The fact the SEC seems willing to make exceptions in these unprecedented times also feels like a good sign for Olivier Sarr's eligibility too— Aaron Torres (@Aaron_Torres) September 30, 2020
Joey Gatewood could be very useful on some goal line plays. Wonder if that could’ve helped us last week— Braden Nevius (@BradenNevius) September 30, 2020

Joey Gatewood will make Kentucky an SEC Championship contender before he leaves school. He'll open around 200-1 to win the Heisman Trophy next year and I'll be all over it. Stud. https://t.co/K18ZZe6rv3— Thomas Casale (@TheTomCasale) September 30, 2020
