Good morning, ladies and gentlemen of the Big Blue Nation, and welcome to the Tuesday Morning Quickies.
Today, my brief take on the Kentucky-Auburn season opener. I’ll just use bullet points:
- I thought UK played very good football in the first half. They looked like an SEC team in every way, especially on the lines.
- The ridiculous blown call at the goal line might have demoralized the team, and escaping without 14-point swing was just moral luck for the officiating crew, who should be ashamed of that call. That’s not an excuse though, you have to be able to get past that.
- Terry Wilson has to show more poise under pressure. I am completely willing to chalk it up to rust and a tough “welcome back to football” situation, but I think we will all be looking for improvement in ball security and decision-making.
- I don’t know what the coaching staff was thinking with all the bubble screens. We need to see less of that play if it doesn’t produce the first couple of times. Josh Ali is a decent playmaker, but there is not enough Lynn Bowden or Randall Cobb in him for me to be comfortable with that play six times a game.
- What happened to make Stoops & Co. forget about the running game, particularly early in the second half?
- I hope our defensive secondary is better than that performance. Ditto our special teams, who did not distinguish themselves.
On to Ole Miss.

UK announces single game tickets now available for all 5 UK football home games

That means after going through all the season football and basketball season ticket holders, they still weren’t able to reach the 12,000 capacity
People still not comfortable in big crowds
I think this is right. I know I would prefer not to attend if I were in a position to (i.e. lived closer), but not because of the proximity to others — more for the hassle of having to wear masks and have to deal with all the attendant regulatory overkill and inconvenience. I am of the same mind, at the moment, about virtually everything including restaurants and entertainment of any kind.
And:
KENTUCKY: Got type of game they needed early. 3 TO’s, 1 took points off board & another put points on. OL/DL played well. 50/50 balls costly, same as UT last year. Couple rough flags also. LOT of damage self inflicted. Positives=Out gained & out rushed AU, converted 12 3rd downs.

Your Quickies:
Kentucky football
- Mark Stoops said rule change could allow Joey Gatewood to be eligible for the rest of the season.
- Stoops says if he had a mulligan, he would call a different play on the goal-line just before the half.
- Mark Stoops will get Kelvin Joseph straightened out. Yes, I think that’s right. He’s talented, but clearly in need of coaching (plus some training on how to maintain his composure). It might take a while, but it will happen.
- UK football commit Jager Burton makes gobsmacking one-handed pick-six.
Other Kentucky sports
- Kentucky Hoops ranked #11 in ESPN’s pre-season rankings. TJ Barnett also has the story here.
- UK men’s soccer wins 3-1 over Louisville. Sweet victory!
