Kentucky Wildcats Morning Quickies: Auburn in the Rear-View Edition

New, comments

The Auburn game was a tough loss for a Kentucky team looking for a breakout, but mistakes, bad officiating and rust all conspired to make Auburn’s job a lot easier than otherwise.

NCAA Football: Kentucky at Auburn John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen of the Big Blue Nation, and welcome to the Tuesday Morning Quickies.

Today, my brief take on the Kentucky-Auburn season opener. I’ll just use bullet points:

  • I thought UK played very good football in the first half. They looked like an SEC team in every way, especially on the lines.
  • The ridiculous blown call at the goal line might have demoralized the team, and escaping without 14-point swing was just moral luck for the officiating crew, who should be ashamed of that call. That’s not an excuse though, you have to be able to get past that.
  • Terry Wilson has to show more poise under pressure. I am completely willing to chalk it up to rust and a tough “welcome back to football” situation, but I think we will all be looking for improvement in ball security and decision-making.
  • I don’t know what the coaching staff was thinking with all the bubble screens. We need to see less of that play if it doesn’t produce the first couple of times. Josh Ali is a decent playmaker, but there is not enough Lynn Bowden or Randall Cobb in him for me to be comfortable with that play six times a game.
  • What happened to make Stoops & Co. forget about the running game, particularly early in the second half?
  • I hope our defensive secondary is better than that performance. Ditto our special teams, who did not distinguish themselves.

On to Ole Miss.

Tweets of the Morning

I think this is right. I know I would prefer not to attend if I were in a position to (i.e. lived closer), but not because of the proximity to others — more for the hassle of having to wear masks and have to deal with all the attendant regulatory overkill and inconvenience. I am of the same mind, at the moment, about virtually everything including restaurants and entertainment of any kind.
