Daimion Collins is a name that blew up on recruiting circles over the summer, and a name that began to pop up on Kentucky’s radar.
Collins, who is considered one of the most athletic frontcourt players in the 2021, class is an elite defensive talent who has long been viewed as a lock to go to either Oklahoma or Texas.
However, in recent months, Kentucky has made a major push for Collins. That push got an extra nudge when Kentucky hired former Texas assistant Jai Lucas, who was one of the lead recruiters for Collins when he was on staff with the Longhorns.
In an article in the Herald Leader, Jarrod Boston, Collins’ high school coach, said Collins and Lucas have a strong relationship.
“I think it helps a lot. They really got along. Jai would call him a lot, talk to him a lot,” Boston told the H-L.
Having Lucas on staff could be huge as Kentucky looks to lure Collins out of the Big 12 stronghold. With Oklahoma and Texas less than 100 miles away, Kentucky is at a geographic disadvantage, but Boston also told the Herald-Leader that Collins has the ultimate goal of getting to the NBA.
If that’s the case, Kentucky is the slam dunk option. Collins wouldn’t have to look far to see an NBA Finals where two former Kentucky big men will go head-to-head.
“In the end, it’s going to come down to what’s best for him, as far as his ultimate goal,” Boston said. “And that’s to make that next step (to the NBA). Well, Kentucky is the No. 1 place for that.
“You go to Kentucky — and you’re going to get a chance to play in the NBA. … You have to seriously think about it.”
Kentucky needs an elite frontcourt talent for the 2021 class, and Collins certainly could fill that role.
