NCAA zeroing in on late November start date for college basketball

Plus a look at UK’s 2020-21 basketball schedule as it currently stands.

It looks like the 2020-21 college basketball season will be begin in late November.

According to Stadium reporter Jon Rothstein, the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Oversight Committee is proposing a start date of Nov. 25th.

The likely reason for this date is many colleges will end their fall semesters by Thanksgiving.

Typically, schools have a fall break in October or November, then have finals during the first two weeks of December. However, the coronavirus has caused many schools to scrap fall breaks and end their semesters by Thanksgiving weekend. That’s why it makes sense to start the season on Nov. 25th, as many college won’t have students on campus as they head home until the spring semester begins in January.

As for 2020-21 basketball schedules, this start date means most college teams will have to adjust the early portions of their non-conference schedules, which normally begin the first week of November.

For the Kentucky Wildcats, they have matchups with Kansas (Champions Classic on Nov. 10), Detroit Mercy (Nov. 13), Hartford (Nov. 17), Georgia State (Nov. 20) and Richmond (Nov. 23) that will need to be rescheduled if the season begins on the 25th.

The Wildcats are also scheduled to play Georgia Tech in the Holiday Hoopsgiving event in Atlanta (GA) on Nov. 27, so that could also end up being the opener.

Speaking of Kentucky’s schedule, we’re now at the point of the year when the full men’s basketball schedule is normally released. Last year, it came out on Sept. 11th. But so far, we’ve not even seen the SEC announce the conference schedule for next season (that was revealed May 29th last year).

Because of the coronavirus causing schedules to be adjusted, if not scrapped entirely, we’ll likely be waiting for several more weeks until the full 2020-21 schedule is completed for Kentucky.
