Kentucky showing interest in center recruit from Texas

Maybe Jai Lucas could help out here.

There’s a new name to watch for on the recruiting trail for Kentucky basketball. And it may have something to do with Texas assistant Jai Lucas, who the Wildcats are pursuing for John Calipari’s coaching staff.

According to Recruits Zone, Kentucky is showing interest in 2022 recruit Vince Iwuchukwu, who hails from San Antonio.

Iwuchukwu, a four-star center ranked 30th overall by 247 Sports Composite, is one of the top recruits from the state of Texas, where Jai Lucas has been recruiting well for the Longhorns. Lucas is reportedly in the running for an assistant coaching spot at Kentucky, and he’d figure to help Calipari’s recruiting efforts in the Lone Star State.

The 6-10, 215-pound Iwuchukwu already holds scholarship offers from Texas, Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma State, TCU, Arkansas, Florida State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M among others.

While Iwuchukwu is a Texas native, he announced last week that he’s transferring to high school powerhouse La Lumiere in Indiana, so he’s going to be playing much closer to Lexington this fall. That’s also the same school where current Wildcat Keion Brooks Jr. went, so there’s another potential recruiting advantage for Calipari and Kentucky. It’s also worth noting that Iwuchukwu has still been playing in summer recruiting events in Texas.

Though he stands at nearly 7-feet tall, Iwuchukwu is an agile big man who has nice touch around the rim but can also step out and hit mid-range jumpers. He also shows off some nice ball-handling and even initiates the fast break in several highlights.

Speaking of, check out some highlights of the newest Wildcat recruit in action:
